About this guide
Scope: Elden Ring base game, including the immediate location recorded as Summonwater Village Outskirts. Nearby but separate places, such as Summonwater Cemetery, Deathtouched Catacombs, Saintsbridge and the Third Church of Marika, are treated as connections rather than parts of the village.
Overview
Summonwater Village is a flooded ruin in north-eastern Limgrave, east of Saintsbridge. It is not a conventional settlement with surviving inhabitants or working shops. Instead, the village has become a shallow, waterlogged graveyard occupied by skeletons and presided over by a Tibia Mariner, one of the undead ferrymen associated with Those Who Live in Death.
The location is small but important. Its boss provides an early Deathroot, which can begin the player’s relationship with D, Hunter of the Dead, and consequently open the route to Gurranq, Beast Clergyman and the Bestial Sanctum. The village also contains the Green Turtle Talisman, a useful early talisman hidden behind a Stonesword Key seal.
Location and boundaries
Summonwater Village lies beside the north-eastern Limgrave road, beyond Saintsbridge when travelling east. The road approaches the village from the west and passes the Summonwater Village Outskirts Site of Grace before entering the ruined settlement.
The village itself is defined by a collection of low, broken structures standing in shallow water. Its western edge is near the approach road and grace. The central and eastern sections contain the flooded boss arena, scattered ruins, a small tower-like ruin with a rune pickup, and the sealed cellar containing the Green Turtle Talisman.
It does not treat the following as subareas of Summonwater Village:
This distinction matters because the nearby cemeteries contain their own Golden Runes and, in the western cemetery, Fevor’s Cookbook [1]. Those rewards should not be counted as village loot.

Geography and atmosphere
The village is partially submerged. Broken walls, roofless structures and shallow pools create a wide, open arena rather than a sequence of rooms. The water does not function as a deep swimming area, so movement remains straightforward, and Torrent can be used around the approach and much of the exterior.
The flooded condition visually reinforces the village’s connection to death and decay. The ruins are not simply abandoned: they have become a gathering place for Those Who Live in Death, the undead beings associated with Deathroot and the spread of death after the Night of Black Knives.
The Tibia Mariner is positioned as the location’s central figure. Its boat and water-based attacks make the village feel like an improvised landing place or graveyard under the control of an undead ferryman. The surrounding skeletons are not a separate dungeon population in the usual sense. They are chiefly part of the encounter’s pressure and are repeatedly brought into the fight by the Mariner.

Access and routes
From Saintsbridge
The most direct route is to follow the main road east from Saintsbridge. The Summonwater Village Outskirts Site of Grace is positioned on the approach, making it a convenient checkpoint before entering the ruins.
From western Limgrave
Players coming from the Gatefront or Stormhill side can follow the Limgrave road east through the central region. The route passes several optional locations before reaching Saintsbridge and the village.
From the Third Church of Marika
The Third Church of Marika is not part of Summonwater Village, but it is an important connected location. A hidden sending gate behind the church can take the player to Bestial Sanctum. D can mark this route after the player obtains Deathroot and speaks with him. The sending gate itself is therefore a quest connection, not a village facility.

Site of Grace and facilities
Summonwater Village Outskirts
This is the village’s only named Site of Grace. It is located west of the flooded ruins and functions as the natural checkpoint for the Tibia Mariner fight.
There are no merchants, smiths, churches, summoning pools or permanent vendors inside the village itself. The grace is primarily useful for:
Facilities directory
The last three entries describe the absence of a verified service, not a claim that every ruined structure has been exhaustively mapped as a named building.

Residents, visitors and factions
D, Hunter of the Dead
D is the only named character directly associated with the village. Before the boss is defeated, he can be encountered near the road and warns the player about the undead infestation. After the Tibia Mariner is defeated, D can appear in the village and offer to introduce the player to Gurranq, provided the relevant Deathroot progression has been reached.
D is not a permanent resident. He is an investigator and hunter passing through the area in pursuit of Those Who Live in Death. His presence is therefore best described as a story-associated visitor.
D later appears at Roundtable Hold, where his stock and dialogue change after the Gurranq introduction. His shop is not located in Summonwater Village. After meeting Gurranq, he can sell Litany of Proper Death and Order’s Blade from Roundtable Hold.
Those Who Live in Death
The village is occupied by undead enemies rather than a named faction with a formal headquarters. They are linked to the spread of Deathroot, which emerged from the altered conditions of death following the Night of Black Knives and Godwyn’s death.
The Tibia Mariner appears to act as a leader or organiser among these undead encounters. Across the game, different Mariners summon different supporting enemies. At Summonwater Village, the supporting enemies are skeletons.

Tibia Mariner
The Tibia Mariner is the village’s field boss. It is an undead boatman who moves through the flooded arena and periodically summons skeletons. The boss is not fought in a conventional sealed room, so the player can use the ruined buildings, open water and elevation changes to create space.
The Summonwater Village version has a listed reward of:
The Mariner is particularly vulnerable to Holy damage according to the available boss data. Its listed resistances also make Strike damage a sensible physical option for players who do not have effective Holy attacks.
Practical tactics
The fight is optional, but it is worth completing early if the player wants to begin Gurranq’s quest route or obtain the skeletal Spirit Ashes.

The Tibia Mariner is a field boss rather than a conventional dungeon boss. The village does not have a second hidden boss encounter verified within the defined scope.

Practical tactics
- 01Activate the grace first. The approach from the west is short, but activating the grace removes unnecessary travel between attempts.
- 02Use Torrent for repositioning. The open arena allows the player to chase the Mariner or escape its summoned skeletons.
- 03Do not tunnel on the boat. The Mariner’s support enemies can surround the player while the boss relocates.
- 04Clear or control skeletons when necessary. Skeletons can rise again unless struck while their remains are glowing. Holy attacks are especially useful because they can prevent undead enemies from reviving.
- 05Use the ruins as cover, but avoid becoming trapped. Broken walls can interrupt movement and camera positioning.
- 06Look for the boss’s movement cue. The Mariner can raise its boat and create large water-based attacks, so staying mobile is safer than standing directly beside it.
- 07Bring a ranged option if needed. The large arena gives bows, spells and incantations room to work, although the boss’s movement can make slow projectiles unreliable.

Items and collectibles
The village’s important loot is spread across the flooded ruins and its sealed cellar. The boss rewards are fixed, while environmental materials can be collected as ordinary world pickups and resource nodes.
Boss rewards
The Deathroot is the most consequential reward. Showing it to D can lead to the Bestial Sanctum introduction. D’s quest entry confirms that he can introduce the player to Gurranq after the player has obtained a Deathroot.
Fixed environmental loot
The Green Turtle Talisman is in a chest behind the cellar’s fog wall. The adjacent imp statue requires one Stonesword Key. The talisman increases stamina recovery, making it useful for early melee, shield and exploration-focused characters.
Crafting materials
The village also contains ordinary gathering materials, including:
These are not unique to Summonwater Village and should be treated as renewable or ordinary world resources rather than one-time named treasures. The village listing records these materials alongside its fixed rewards.
Nearby items that are not village loot
The cemeteries around the village are separate areas. Their recorded rewards include Golden Runes, while the western cemetery also contains Fevor’s Cookbook [1]. These should be collected as part of a wider eastern Limgrave sweep, not counted as items inside Summonwater Village.

Walkthrough
Recommended first-clear route
The route deliberately leaves D until after the fight because the village encounter is the event that changes his local dialogue and allows the Deathroot-related introduction.
---
Recommended first-clear route
- 01Rest at Summonwater Village Outskirts.
- 02Enter from the west, staying alert for skeletons in and around the flooded ruins.
- 03Locate the Tibia Mariner in the central waterlogged area.
- 04Defeat the boss, prioritising mobility and preventing skeletons from reviving.
- 05Collect Deathroot and Skeletal Militiaman Ashes from the boss reward.
- 06Search the northern ruins for the Smithing Stone [1] and the Trina’s Lily pickups.
- 07Search the north-eastern ruined structure for Golden Rune [4].
- 08Find the cellar in the south-eastern part of the village.
- 09Use one Stonesword Key on the imp statue.
- 10Open the chest and take the Green Turtle Talisman.
- 11Speak with D after the boss is dead. If he does not appear immediately, rest or reload the area and check the village and nearby approach.
- 12Return to Roundtable Hold or follow D’s marked route, depending on the dialogue available in the current progression state.
Progression changes and missability
D’s position
D can be encountered before entering the village, near the road by Saintsbridge, where he warns the player about the undead. After defeating the Mariner, he can appear in or near the village and react to the victory. If he is not present, reloading the area is a practical first step.
D can later be found at Roundtable Hold regardless of whether the player met him on the Limgrave road. If the player already possesses Deathroot, the Roundtable Hold conversation can provide the Gurranq introduction even if the earlier roadside dialogue was missed.
Deathroot progression
The Deathroot is not merely a boss trophy. It is a quest item connected to Gurranq. Once D has acknowledged it, the player can follow the marked route to the sending gate near the Third Church of Marika and travel to Bestial Sanctum.
What can be missed?
The village’s fixed loot is generally recoverable after the boss is defeated. The more relevant missable concern is dialogue timing:
---
Hazards and secrets
Skeleton revival
Skeletons are the main practical hazard. Defeating one is not always enough. When a skeleton falls, strike its glowing remains before it rises again. Holy damage is particularly effective against Those Who Live in Death, and the Litany of Proper Death later sold by D is designed specifically for this enemy category.
Open-arena boss movement
The Tibia Mariner’s arena is spacious, but the boss can relocate quickly and summon additional threats. The danger is less about a complex moveset than about being surrounded while trying to chase the boat. Torrent makes repositioning easier, but careless mounted attacks can leave the player directly in the path of the Mariner’s area attacks.
Cellar seal
The cellar is easy to overlook because it is not part of the main boss route. Its fog wall and imp statue indicate a Stonesword Key door. If the player has only one key, the Green Turtle Talisman is a reasonable early use, particularly for stamina-heavy builds, but the key is consumable and should be spent deliberately.

Lore
Summonwater Village presents a small-scale example of the setting’s conflict over death. The village has not simply been occupied by ordinary bandits or soldiers. It has become a place where Deathroot-related undead gather, and D’s presence shows that the Golden Order actively hunts such beings.
The Tibia Mariner’s role is especially suggestive. Mariners recur in different parts of the Lands Between, carrying boats through places that are not all fully submerged. Their repeated association with Deathroot, skeletons and other forms of undead life makes them appear less like ordinary local bosses and more like representatives of a broader death-bound order.
The village therefore works as an early introduction to several themes that later become much more important:
