About this guide
Spoilers: This guide discusses Knight Bernahl’s later quest, Volcano Manor, his invasion in Crumbling Farum Azula and the Bell Bearing Hunter.
Overview
This guide covers the Warmaster’s Shack in the Elden Ring base game, including its immediate site, its Site of Grace, Knight Bernahl’s early-game appearance and the Bell Bearing Hunter encounter. It does not treat the wider Stormhill countryside, Deathtouched Catacombs or nearby ruins as part of the shack itself.

Introduction
Warmaster’s Shack is a small, ruined shelter in Stormhill, north-west Limgrave. Its importance comes less from the building itself than from the NPC who occupies it. Knight Bernahl acts as an early Ash of War merchant, giving new characters access to weapon skills that would otherwise require a longer journey or a different merchant. The shack also serves as the arena for Limgrave’s Bell Bearing Hunter encounter, provided the necessary conditions are met.
The location is easy to overlook because it contains little conventional treasure. Its value is concentrated in three things:
Warmaster’s Shack is also the first location in Bernahl’s wider story. His appearance here is an early, relatively peaceful introduction to a character who later becomes associated with Volcano Manor, the Fortified Manor in Leyndell and Crumbling Farum Azula.
Boundaries and local geography
Warmaster’s Shack refers to the ruined hut and the immediate ground around it, including the Site of Grace outside the building. It is not the name of the entire wooded section of Stormhill, nor does it include every item or enemy on the roads leading away from it.
The shack stands beside the main road through Stormhill. Stormgate lies to the south, while Stormhill Shack is along the road to the west. Continuing east and north-east leads towards the Deathtouched Catacombs, Saintsbridge and the eastern Limgrave route. These are neighbouring destinations rather than subareas of Warmaster’s Shack.
The building is visibly damaged, with much of its front open to the weather. Bernahl stands inside during the day. There is no settlement, defensive wall or functional commercial district attached to the site. The only permanent facility at the location is the Site of Grace.
Access and routes
From Stormgate
After passing through Stormgate, follow the main road north-east through Stormhill. Stormhill Shack is located along this route. Continue east from there and look for the ruined shelter beside the road. The Warmaster’s Shack Site of Grace is immediately outside the building.
This is usually the most natural route for a first visit because it links the shack with Stormhill Shack, Roderika and the early Limgrave progression route.
From Stormhill Shack
Rest at Stormhill Shack, then follow the road east. The journey is short and generally safer than attempting to approach from the surrounding hills. Wolves and mounted or lightly armoured road enemies may be encountered in the broader area, but they are not permanent occupants of the shack itself.
From the east
The shack can also be reached by travelling west from the Deathtouched Catacombs and the road towards Saintsbridge. This route is useful when visiting the catacombs, meeting other Limgrave characters or continuing towards eastern Limgrave.
Site of Grace
Warmaster’s Shack
The Site of Grace is outside the ruined building. It provides:
Because the shack is both a merchant stop and an optional boss location, activating this Grace early is worthwhile even if you do not intend to fight the Hunter immediately.
Residents and characters
Knight Bernahl
Knight Bernahl is a Tarnished warrior and Ash of War merchant. He introduces himself as a former knight who questions whether the player still has faith in the guidance of Grace. His early dialogue establishes the conflict between the traditional Golden Order and the increasingly fractured loyalties of the Tarnished.
During the day, Bernahl stands inside Warmaster’s Shack. Speaking to him opens his merchant menu. His presence is not merely decorative: he is one of the earliest characters who can directly expand a weapon’s skill options.
Bernahl’s early shop
The following stock is associated with Bernahl’s merchant inventory at Warmaster’s Shack. Each listed Ash of War has one purchase available from the shop.
Bernahl’s importance is especially high for early melee builds. No Skill can remove a shield’s default skill, allowing the player to use a weapon skill while still carrying the shield. Kick is useful against guarding enemies, Endure provides brief damage resistance and Quickstep improves mobility. The practical value of each skill depends on the weapon type and build, so it is better to buy skills that solve a particular combat problem rather than spending runes on the entire inventory.
Bernahl’s later progression
Bernahl eventually leaves Warmaster’s Shack if his story advances. He later appears as Recusant Bernahl at Volcano Manor, where his role changes from independent Ash of War instructor to participant in the recusant assassination campaign. After further progression he becomes connected to the Fortified Manor invasion in Leyndell and to events in Crumbling Farum Azula.
Do not kill him at the shack merely to obtain early equipment unless you are deliberately abandoning his later content. His death can prevent access to his normal quest progression and may alter which Ashes of War are available through his Bell Bearing.
Bernahl’s early shop
| Ash of War | Price |
|---|---|
| Stamp (Upward Cut) | 1,500 runes |
| Kick | 800 runes |
| Endure | 600 runes |
| War Cry | 800 runes |
| Spinning Slash | 1,200 runes |
| Impaling Thrust | 1,000 runes |
| Quickstep | 800 runes |
| Storm Blade | 1,800 runes |
| Parry | 600 runes |
| No Skill | 600 runes |
Enemies and bosses
Bell Bearing Hunter
The Bell Bearing Hunter is an optional night-time boss that can appear inside Warmaster’s Shack. The encounter is separate from Elemer of the Briar’s named boss fight in the Shaded Castle, although the Hunter uses the same broad identity and combat style.
How to make the Hunter appear
The Hunter replaces Bernahl for the duration of the encounter. Bernahl is not present while the boss is active, but he returns if the player dies or defeats the Hunter.
Reports of the encounter failing to appear are commonly associated with incomplete Bernahl dialogue, resting at an insufficient time of day or approaching without resetting the area. The exact trigger can be inconsistent between playthrough states, so exhausting Bernahl’s dialogue and performing a full night-time reset is the safest approach.
Combat advice
The Hunter’s most dangerous feature is his telekinetically controlled sword. He can send the weapon across the shack, sweep it through the arena and combine it with shield attacks or delayed grabs. The building is small, so the player has little room to escape a long attack chain.
How to make the Hunter appear: A reliable sequence is
- 01Visit Warmaster’s Shack during the day.
- 02Speak to Knight Bernahl.
- 03Exhaust his available dialogue.
- 04Rest at the Site of Grace and pass time until night.
- 05Leave and return to the shack, or fast-travel away and back if the encounter does not activate.
- 06Enter the shack’s immediate area.
Items and rewards
Bone Peddler’s Bell Bearing
The Bone Peddler’s Bell Bearing is the principal fixed reward tied directly to Warmaster’s Shack. Give it to the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold to expand their shop. It unlocks unlimited purchases of:
The item is particularly useful for characters who craft large quantities of bone-based ammunition or want a dependable source of beast bones without repeatedly hunting wildlife.
No major fixed treasure inside the shack
Unlike a catacomb or military camp, Warmaster’s Shack does not contain a chest room, dungeon boss arena, spell scroll or large collection of static collectibles. The location’s meaningful rewards come from its NPC and optional boss rather than from ordinary ground loot.
The wider Stormhill area contains separate items and encounters, but they should not be catalogued as Warmaster’s Shack rewards. For example, the Deathtouched Catacombs, nearby undead camps and road-side encounters belong to their own locations.
Walkthrough
Preserving Bernahl’s quest
The exact order of Volcano Manor events matters for some of Bernahl’s rewards and encounters. His shop also gains additional stock after he receives the Drawing-Room Key at Volcano Manor. The later Ashes of War associated with that progression include Eruption and Assassin’s Gambit.
First visit
- 01Approach the ruined shack during the day.
- 02Activate the Warmaster’s Shack Site of Grace.
- 03Speak to Knight Bernahl.
- 04Listen to all of his dialogue.
- 05Open his shop and inspect the Ashes of War.
- 06Buy only the skills suited to your current weapon and build.
- 07Leave the shack and continue towards the Deathtouched Catacombs, Stormveil Castle or eastern Limgrave.
Returning for the Bell Bearing Hunter
- 01Make sure Bernahl’s dialogue has been exhausted.
- 02Rest at the Grace and select night-time.
- 03If Bernahl remains inside, rest again or fast-travel away and return.
- 04Enter the shack’s immediate area.
- 05Defeat the Bell Bearing Hunter.
- 06Take the Bone Peddler’s Bell Bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks.
Preserving Bernahl’s quest: If you intend to complete Bernahl’s story
- 01Do not attack or kill him at Warmaster’s Shack.
- 02Continue through the main game until Volcano Manor becomes available.
- 03Meet him again there as Recusant Bernahl.
- 04Follow the relevant Volcano Manor progression before finishing the area’s main lord encounter.
- 05Later, revisit his appearances in Leyndell and Crumbling Farum Azula.
Suggested exploration route
For a first Limgrave circuit, the following route keeps the location’s content connected without confusing neighbouring areas:
Suggested exploration route: steps
- 01Start at Stormhill Shack and speak with Roderika.
- 02Follow the road east to Warmaster’s Shack.
- 03Activate the Grace and speak with Bernahl.
- 04Buy or postpone Ashes of War according to your build.
- 05Continue east towards Deathtouched Catacombs.
- 06Explore the catacombs as a separate location.
- 07Follow the road towards Saintsbridge and eastern Limgrave.
- 08Return to Warmaster’s Shack at night if you want the Bell Bearing Hunter.
- 09Preserve Bernahl if you want his later quest and equipment.
Lore and significance
The shack’s name reflects Bernahl’s former identity as a warrior and instructor rather than the presence of a formal military organisation. He is a Tarnished who once stood close to lordship, but his story is shaped by the failure of his Finger Maiden and his rejection of the guidance of Grace. His location in a collapsing roadside shelter is therefore appropriate: he is a martial authority without a kingdom, teaching practical skills while questioning the purpose of the struggle around him.
The Bell Bearing Hunter encounter provides a darker contrast. Bernahl sells combat techniques openly, while the Hunter is associated with the murder of merchants and instructors and the theft of their Bell Bearings. The same ruined hut consequently acts as both a training post and a crime scene, depending on the time of day and the player’s progression.
