About this guide
Scope: Base-game Elden Ring. This guide treats Ancestral Woods as the open forest area in Nokron, Eternal City, reached after the Mimic Tear encounter. It includes the forest, the Hallowhorn Grounds (North) structure and its six-flame Regal Ancestor Spirit activity, plus the immediately accessible Sunken Ruins beneath the north-western cliffs. It does not fold in Night’s Sacred Ground, the Mimic Tear arena, the Siofra Aqueduct or the lower Siofra River into Ancestral Woods, although those areas connect closely to it.
Overview
Ancestral Woods is Nokron’s quietest-looking stretch and one of its most important. The area is a broad, blue-lit forest populated by Ancestral Followers, deer, wolves, rats and a wandering Red Wolf of Radagon. Its apparent calm hides two major discoveries:
The forest is also one of the clearest demonstrations of the Ancestral Followers’ culture. Their shamans sing beside the cliffs and ruins, while warriors patrol the trees and practise with bows, axes and great horns. The area’s architecture appears to belong to an older civilisation beneath Nokron rather than to the later Eternal City above it.
Ancestral Woods is optional for completing the main story, but it is highly relevant to Ranni’s quest, the Regal Ancestor remembrance, several valuable weapons and upgrade materials, and the game’s wider themes of life, death and pre-Erdtree traditions.
Introduction
- 01the route to Night’s Sacred Ground, where Ranni’s quest item is found;
- 02the six-flame ritual that summons the Regal Ancestor Spirit, one of Nokron’s optional remembrance bosses.
Boundaries and hierarchy
Ancestral Woods belongs to the underground world of Siofra River, more specifically to the city-region of Nokron, Eternal City. Nokron is not a single compact dungeon. It is a collection of connected districts and open spaces, including the city approach, the Mimic Tear district, Ancestral Woods, Night’s Sacred Ground, Hallowhorn Grounds and routes towards the Siofra Aqueduct.
Siofra River
The large underground region beneath eastern Limgrave. The player initially reaches it through the Siofra River Well in Mistwood.
Nokron, Eternal City
The upper underground city opened after Starscourge Radahn’s defeat. The city contains several distinct named areas and Site of Grace locations.
Ancestral Woods
The open forest north and north-west of the Mimic Tear district. It contains the Ancestral Woods Site of Grace, scattered ritual flames, Ancestral Follower camps and the route to Hallowhorn Grounds.
Hallowhorn Grounds (North)
The ruined ceremonial structure at the northern end of the forest. It contains the horned remains used to enter the Regal Ancestor Spirit encounter. It is best treated as a landmark within the Ancestral Woods route rather than as a separate major region.
Sunken Ruins
An unmarked, partially submerged ruin complex beneath the north-western cliffs. It is reached through careful platforming from the forest’s upper ledges. It is a sub-area of the Ancestral Woods route, not the whole forest. Game8 identifies it as the area’s principal optional platforming section.
Separate neighbouring areas
The following places should not be merged into Ancestral Woods:
The two Ancestor encounters are therefore distinct. The lower Siofra River contains Ancestor Spirit, while Ancestral Woods contains the stronger Regal Ancestor Spirit.

Separate neighbouring areas
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Mimic Tear | the boss arena and surrounding district immediately before the forest. |
| Night’s Sacred Ground | the rooftop and cathedral-like district south of the Ancestral Woods Site of Grace. |
| Siofra Aqueduct | the route east and south-east of Nokron, leading towards the Valiant Gargoyles. |
| Lower Siofra River | the earlier underground region reached from Limgrave, including the Siofra River Bank and the first Ancestor Spirit encounter. |
| Hallowhorn Grounds (South) | the separate ceremonial area associated with the first Ancestor Spirit in lower Siofra River. |
Geography and atmosphere
Ancestral Woods is a high, forested shelf overlooking deeper portions of Nokron. The canopy is made from pale, dead-looking branches, while blue light filters through the underground cavern roof. The terrain is uneven, with broad grassy clearings, cliff edges, shallow water and ruined masonry.
The forest’s most useful navigational feature is its height. From the upper cliffs you can look down into the ruins below and identify several platforming routes. The forest is not arranged around a central road. Instead, paths divide around trees, rocks, ruined walls and groups of Ancestral Followers.
The north-western edge is especially easy to misread. Several seemingly inaccessible corpses and structures can be reached by dropping onto the tops of ruined columns and crossing narrow beams. A Golden Rune 12 is found on the approach to the Sunken Ruins platforming route.

Access and routes
Reaching Nokron
You cannot reach Ancestral Woods at the beginning of the game. First defeat Starscourge Radahn in Caelid. A falling star then creates a crater in southern Limgrave, near Fort Haight. Entering the crater leads into Nokron.
Proceed through Nokron until you defeat the Mimic Tear. Beyond the Mimic Tear arena, cross the bridge and continue into the blue-lit forest. The first Site of Grace in the area is Ancestral Woods.
To Night’s Sacred Ground
From the Ancestral Woods Site of Grace, look south towards the large rooftops below. Jump across the rooftops and descend into the separate Night’s Sacred Ground district. This route eventually leads to the Mimic Tear Ashes, Black Whetblade, Fingerslayer Blade and other loot. Night’s Sacred Ground is also a major step in Ranni’s quest.
Do not expect the forest itself to provide a conventional doorway. The connection is an environmental route over and down through Nokron’s architecture.
To Hallowhorn Grounds
From the Ancestral Woods Site of Grace, travel north. The ceremonial structure stands at the end of the forest route. The remains at the rear are inactive until all six flames have been lit.
To the Sunken Ruins
This is a precision platforming route. Torrent is not available in Nokron, so use short controlled jumps rather than long running leaps.
---
From the Mimic Tear Site of Grace: This is the normal route
- 01Leave the Mimic Tear arena.
- 02Cross the broad bridge into the forest.
- 03Follow the main route through the Ancestral Followers.
- 04Activate the Ancestral Woods Site of Grace.
- 05Explore north and north-west for the ritual flames and ruins.
- 06Continue north towards Hallowhorn Grounds.
To the Sunken Ruins
- 01Begin at Ancestral Woods Site of Grace.
- 02Travel north-west towards the cliff edge overlooking the submerged ruins.
- 03Locate the ledge near the Ancestral Followers and giant rats.
- 04Drop onto the ruined column.
- 05Cross the broken masonry and beams.
- 06Search the corpses and upper platforms before descending further.
Residents, enemies and factions
Ancestral Followers
The Ancestral Followers are the dominant population of Ancestral Woods. Their equipment and behaviour distinguish several battlefield roles:
The followers are associated with a religious tradition that predates or rejects the Erdtree’s central authority. Their clothing, horn imagery and ritual behaviour connect them to the Ancestral Spirits. They also provide some of the area’s best environmental storytelling. They stand beside the ritual flames, gather near horned remains and coexist with the forest’s animals.
Other ordinary enemies
The Red Wolf is a roaming mini-boss-style encounter rather than the area’s main boss. It uses sorceries associated with the Red Wolf of Radagon fought in Raya Lucaria and may be accompanied by wolves. Game8 specifically lists this encounter as an optional fight within the forest.
Enemy directory
Some enemy variants may be described differently by different guides or database taxonomies. The important practical distinction is between ordinary followers, shamans, archers and the roaming Red Wolf.

The six flames and Regal Ancestor Spirit
The area’s central activity is the lighting of six ritual flames. The flames are distributed through the forest rather than placed in a straight line. Some are beside the main route, while others are near cliffs, ruins, shamans and rats.
When the sixth flame is lit, a message announces that power gathers somewhere in the horned remains. Return to Hallowhorn Grounds and interact with the glowing remains to be transported to the boss arena.
Practical flame route
The exact order is flexible, but this route reduces backtracking:
There are six flames for this Regal Ancestor encounter. Do not confuse them with the separate flame ritual for the Ancestor Spirit in lower Siofra River.
Regal Ancestor Spirit
The Regal Ancestor Spirit is a spectral stag that can fly, leap and recover health by absorbing nearby animal spirits. It is optional, but defeating it awards:
The remembrance can be exchanged for unique rewards, including the Winged Greathorn and Ancestral Spirit’s Horn, depending on the chosen remembrance exchange. The boss is vulnerable to several conventional damage types but has notable resistance to bleed and other status-focused approaches. Spirit Ashes and co-operative play are available.
Boss preparation
---
Practical flame route
- 01Start from Ancestral Woods Site of Grace.
- 02Take the eastern and south-eastern paths first, checking the spaces behind rocks and trees.
- 03Move north-west towards the cliff edge and Sunken Ruins approach.
- 04Search around the singing shamans and giant rats.
- 05Follow the northern route into Hallowhorn Grounds.
- 06If the remains do not glow, return through the forest and check the cliff-side flame positions.
Items and collectibles
The area mixes fixed treasure, corpse loot, enemy drops and materials. These categories should not be treated as interchangeable.
Fixed or placed loot
The following items are associated with the Ancestral Woods route or its immediate ruins:
A Celestial Dew is found on a corpse in the ruins overlooking the lower part of Nokron. It is used at the Church of Vows to restore relations with angered NPCs, although it cannot revive murdered characters.
The Sunken Ruins and surrounding Nokron platforming section contain additional fixed treasure, but several online guides group these together with the adjacent Night’s Sacred Ground route. For that reason, the following major items should be attributed to nearby Nokron, not automatically to Ancestral Woods itself:
These are found in the broader Nokron complex, especially Night’s Sacred Ground and the city approach.
Enemy drops
Ancestral Followers can drop pieces of their equipment, including the Shining Horned Headband and other parts of the Ancestral Follower or Shaman equipment. These are random drops, so killing every follower once does not guarantee a full set. The Shining Horned Headband is associated with Ancestral Woods farming.
Boss rewards
Because item databases differ in whether they assign the forest’s edge, Sunken Ruins and adjacent rooftops to Ancestral Woods or Night’s Sacred Ground, exact corpse-by-corpse attribution remains a boundary issue. The major fixed rewards should be checked against an in-game map while exploring rather than assumed from a broad Nokron checklist.

Nearby connections and quest relevance
Ranni’s quest
Ancestral Woods is not where the Fingerslayer Blade is found, but it is the access point for the rooftop route to Night’s Sacred Ground. The blade is required to advance Ranni’s quest. After obtaining it, return to Ranni at Ranni’s Rise. Progress then opens later stages of the quest, including access to Renna’s Rise.
Siofra River
The forest is thematically connected to the lower Siofra River, where the player first encounters Ancestral Followers, Hallowhorn structures and the separate Ancestor Spirit boss. The two areas use related architecture and rituals, but they are different progression states and should not be merged.
Night’s Sacred Ground
This is the most important neighbouring area. It can be reached from the forest’s southern rooftops and contains both quest-critical and high-value optional loot. It is also a more urban, architectural district, in contrast to the forested Ancestral Woods.
Siofra Aqueduct
The aqueduct lies beyond Nokron and eventually leads to the Valiant Gargoyles. It is not part of Ancestral Woods, though Nokron’s paths can make the whole underground city seem like one continuous area.

Suggested exploration route
For a first complete visit, use this order:
Suggested exploration route: steps
- 01Activate Ancestral Woods Site of Grace.
- 02Sweep the area immediately around the grace for nearby followers, animals and the first flame positions.
- 03Follow the eastern and northern paths, collecting fixed corpses before moving into the Hallowhorn structure.
- 04Search the cliff edge and the singing-shaman area for the Sunken Ruins route.
- 05Complete the platforming section while the location is quiet, rather than trying to return after the Regal Ancestor fight.
- 06Light all six flames.
- 07Touch the remains in Hallowhorn Grounds and defeat Regal Ancestor Spirit.
- 08Return to the grace.
- 09Travel south over the rooftops into Night’s Sacred Ground for Ranni’s quest and its major loot.
- 10Only then continue towards the Siofra Aqueduct if you are following Nokron’s full optional route.
Hazards and secrets
The forest’s peaceful wildlife is misleading
Deer and other animals are not normally aggressive, but they are part of the Regal Ancestor Spirit’s healing and attack mechanics. During the boss fight, nearby spirits can become resources for the boss.
Shamans are dangerous at range
The singing Ancestral Followers are easy to overlook because they often stand at a distance or beside environmental objects. Their ranged attacks can stagger a player who is concentrating on melee warriors. Kill shamans first or use the terrain to block their line of sight.
The Sunken Ruins are a fall hazard
The ruin route contains narrow ledges and awkward drops. The most common mistake is jumping too far from the upper cliff rather than dropping onto the first visible column. Approach the platforming section from the side and use the broadest surfaces first.
Nearby loot is often mislabelled
A guide may call an item “Ancestral Woods loot” simply because the Ancestral Woods Site of Grace is the nearest checkpoint. This is particularly common with Night’s Sacred Ground treasure. Treat the following as separate:
---
Lore
The Ancestral Followers reject the idea that life must be governed by the Erdtree. The description of the Regal Ancestor’s remembrance presents the Ancestor Spirits as beings whose existence lies outside the Erdtree’s order, while the followers’ ritual behaviour suggests a tradition built around natural cycles, death and renewal.
The contrast with the Eternal City is deliberate. Nokron’s stone buildings and silver beings represent an artificial civilisation that sought a lord and a future outside the Golden Order. Ancestral Woods, by contrast, preserves an older natural religion beneath that ruined city. The two cultures occupy the same underground world but are not presented as identical.
The area’s dead trees, glowing animal spirits and horned remains reinforce a cycle in which death is not an ending. The Regal Ancestor Spirit literally draws strength from other spirits, turning the forest’s wildlife into part of its supernatural ecosystem.
