Overview
The Church of the Crusade is a small but important landmark in western Scadu Altus. Its primary rewards are two Scadutree Fragments, but the church is also one stage of Fire Knight Queelign’s encounter chain and a useful stop for the Forager Brood event nearby.
The church itself should not be confused with the much larger Church District of Shadow Keep. They are separate locations in separate parts of Scadu Altus. The Church of the Crusade is an exposed religious ruin on the western plateau, while the Church District is a flooded section of Shadow Keep reached later through the eastern and southern routes.
The church proper
It does not include the whole western Scadu Altus plateau, the nearby military encampments or the lower ground around the Scadu Altus, West Site of Grace.
Separate nearby locations
The following places are close enough to appear on the same journey, but they are distinct locations:
The Church District is particularly easy to confuse with the Church of the Crusade. It is not a subarea of this church. It is a separate section of Shadow Keep and contains the later stage of Queelign’s quest.
---
The church stands away from the main road on a raised, open section of the western plateau. From a distance, its pale structure and damaged tower make it visible against the surrounding terrain.
The route is exposed rather than labyrinthine. Torrent is useful for crossing the open ground, but dismount before entering the church if you are preparing for the invasion.
A second useful approach is from Scadu Altus, West. From that grace, travel north and then work around the rising ground towards the church. This route is convenient if you have already explored the lower western plateau, although Highroad Cross is generally the more direct starting point. The church has no internal grace, so either route eventually sends you back to one of those checkpoints.
---
The statue is the church’s central landmark. It is a headless depiction of Marika standing over the altar, and the two Scadutree Fragments are found at its base. The statue is not a functioning quest object or boss arena in its own right.
---
Separate nearby locations
The simplest route is from Highroad Cross
- 01Start at Highroad Cross and follow the road north.
- 02Continue towards the open plateau, keeping watch for Messmer soldiers and other roaming enemies.
- 03Turn towards the church before reaching the larger soldier encampment.
- 04Approach the building from the front and enter.
Separate nearby locations
First invasion
Approaching the altar inside the church triggers Fire Knight Queelign as a red phantom invader. He is an aggressive melee fighter who uses fire-based attacks and a large greatsword. The invasion is not a conventional boss fight, but Queelign’s damage can be severe, especially for characters who have entered Scadu Altus without many Scadutree Blessing upgrades.
He usually presses the attack immediately. The broad church interior gives enough space to circle him, but the altar and walls can interfere with evasive movement. Try to avoid being trapped against the statue or side walls.
The invasion is linked to Queelign’s broader encounter chain. If this is the first time you have fought him, he drops the Crusade Insignia. If you have already defeated him at Belurat, Tower Settlement, the church encounter instead provides the later-stage rewards listed below.
Encounter-order rewards
The exact order matters. The Church of the Crusade is one of two invasion locations associated with Queelign before his final appearance in the Church District Prayer Room. If you are pursuing his quest, do not treat the church encounter as an isolated event.
Queelign encounter directory
The Prayer Room Key is used later in the Church District of Shadow Keep. It does not open anything inside the Church of the Crusade.
---
Two Scadutree Fragments are placed together at the base of the Marika statue inside the church. These are fixed rewards, not random drops. They contribute to the Scadutree Blessing system, which improves attack power and damage negation in the Realm of Shadow.
The fragments are generally collected after defeating Queelign, since approaching the altar is what initiates the invasion. If you enter, trigger the invader and retreat, you can return after the fight and collect both fragments.
Acquisition steps
There are no separate fragment placements elsewhere in the church. The two pieces are a single local reward cluster.
---
A wounded member of the Forager Brood can be found just outside the church. This is part of the wider Forager Brood interaction sequence in Shadow of the Erdtree.
The creature is not a merchant and does not open a permanent shop or facility. Instead, it can be healed by placing a Warming Stone or Sunwarmth Stone nearby and then resting at any Site of Grace. After the event advances, return to the location to receive the reward.
This event is separate from the Queelign invasion. Helping the Forager Brood does not remove the invasion or alter the Scadutree Fragment rewards.
Encounter-order rewards
| Queelign encounter state | Reward at Church of the Crusade |
|---|---|
| First Queelign invasion | Crusade Insignia |
| Belurat encounter already completed | Ash of War: Flame Skewer and Prayer Room Key |
Acquisition steps
- 01Enter the church.
- 02Approach the statue and altar.
- 03Defeat Fire Knight Queelign when he invades.
- 04Return to the front of the statue.
- 05Pick up both Scadutree Fragments.
Forager Brood procedure
Forager Brood directory
The Forager Brood is a local NPC encounter rather than a resident population. There is no evidence of a permanent settlement or larger brood camp within the church grounds.
---
Forager Brood procedure: steps
- 01Locate the injured Forager Brood outside the church.
- 02Place a Warming Stone or Sunwarmth Stone beside it.
- 03Rest at a Site of Grace.
- 04Return to the church exterior.
- 05Collect the reward.
Fixed items
The Queelign rewards are not all obtained in one playthrough at the same point. The item received depends on whether his Belurat invasion has already been completed.
Fixed items
| Item | Location | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Scadutree Fragment ×2 | At the base of the Marika statue | Available after dealing with the church invasion |
| Crusade Insignia | Dropped by Queelign | First church invasion |
| Ash of War: Flame Skewer | Dropped by Queelign | Church invasion after Belurat encounter |
| Prayer Room Key | Dropped by Queelign | Church invasion after Belurat encounter |
| Forager Brood Cookbook [4] | Reward from wounded Forager Brood | Heal the Forager Brood and rest |
| Shadow Sunflower ×3 | Reward from wounded Forager Brood | Heal the Forager Brood and rest |
| Rune Arc | Church-area minor loot | Fixed pickup |
Materials and random drops
The surrounding plateau contains ordinary regional materials and enemy drops, but these should not be confused with church-specific collectibles. Enemy equipment and crafting materials in the wider area are not guaranteed rewards from the landmark itself.
There is no verified shop inventory, Sacred Tear, Golden Seed, memory stone or special weapon permanently placed as part of the church’s fixed loot.

Local environmental hazards
The church has no traps, platforming section or environmental puzzle. Its main danger is the invasion itself. The approach across western Scadu Altus may expose the player to roaming enemies before the church encounter begins.
The statue and altar do not constitute a boss arena, and the church does not contain a dungeon boss. Once Queelign has been defeated, the building is comparatively safe apart from any enemies that followed the player inside.
---
For a clean first visit, the following order avoids unnecessary backtracking:
This order is efficient because it deals with the only major hostile encounter before attempting the stationary NPC interaction.
---
Local environmental hazards: steps
- 01Activate Highroad Cross if you have not already done so.
- 02Travel towards the church and clear or bypass enemies on the approach.
- 03Enter the church and prepare for Queelign.
- 04Defeat the invading Fire Knight.
- 05Collect the two Scadutree Fragments from the statue.
- 06Search the exterior for the wounded Forager Brood.
- 07Heal the Forager Brood with a Warming Stone or Sunwarmth Stone.
- 08Rest at Highroad Cross.
- 09Return to collect the Cookbook and Shadow Sunflowers.
- 10Continue either west through Scadu Altus or east towards the routes leading to Shadow Keep.
DLC access
The Church of the Crusade exists only in Shadow of the Erdtree. It is not present in the base game, New Game Plus as a separate location, or another Elden Ring continuity.
Queelign’s quest
The church encounter is part of a progression chain:
At the Prayer Room, giving Queelign an Iris of Grace yields Fire Knight Queelign Ashes, while giving him an Iris of Occultation yields Queelign’s Greatsword. These rewards are mutually exclusive in a single playthrough unless the player uses a backup save or another playthrough.
Defeating Queelign at the Church of the Crusade does not by itself resolve his quest. The later Church District stage is still required for the final choice.
Queelign’s quest: steps
- 01Church of the Crusade or Belurat, Tower Settlement, depending on order.
- 02The other Queelign invasion.
- 03Church District Prayer Room.
- 04Choice between an Iris of Grace and an Iris of Occultation.
Forager Brood
The wounded Forager Brood can be killed, intentionally or accidentally. Doing so removes the normal healing interaction and prevents the associated Cookbook reward in that playthrough. Treat it as a friendly NPC encounter rather than an ordinary creature.
Major DLC progression
The Church of the Crusade is not a required main-story location. It can be visited while exploring western Scadu Altus and does not require defeating a major remembrance boss. Its rewards remain useful throughout the DLC, particularly the two Scadutree Fragments, but the church is not a gateway to Shadow Keep or the Church District.
---
The church’s name connects it to the religious and military campaign associated with Messmer. The Realm of Shadow contains several damaged or abandoned religious sites that show how Marika’s faith was imposed, maintained or later discarded in this hidden land.
The Church of the Crusade is especially striking because its statue of Marika has no head. The game does not provide a direct explanation for when or why the head was removed, so any claim that identifies a specific culprit would be speculation. What can be stated from the setting is that the damaged statue reflects the church’s ruined state and the wider collapse of the crusading order.
The presence of Fire Knight Queelign gives the location a more personal connection to this history. He remains committed to Marika’s cause even after the crusade has become a broken and abandoned project. His invasion dialogue and later quest present him as a soldier struggling to find purpose in a faith and military structure that no longer offers him certainty.
The church also illustrates an important contrast in the DLC. The Land of Shadow contains places devoted to Marika and the Erdtree, but they are not presented with the same security or vitality as the great churches of the Lands Between. Here the religious building is open to the wilderness, its central statue is mutilated and its surviving defender attacks the Tarnished as though guarding the last remnant of a lost order.

Is there a Site of Grace at the Church of the Crusade?
No. The closest convenient checkpoint is Highroad Cross. Scadu Altus, West is also useful, particularly when approaching from the lower western plateau.
How many Scadutree Fragments are in the church?
Two. Both are found together at the base of the statue inside the building.
Why did I not receive the Crusade Insignia?
You probably defeated Fire Knight Queelign at Belurat, Tower Settlement first. In that case, the Church of the Crusade encounter provides Ash of War: Flame Skewer and the Prayer Room Key instead.
Is the Church District part of the Church of the Crusade?
No. The Church District is a separate area within Shadow Keep. It is later involved in Queelign’s quest, but it is not a subarea of this church.
Can I buy anything here?
No verified functional shop or merchant operates at the church. The Forager Brood interaction is a reward event, not a purchasing service.
Does the church contain a normal boss?
No. Fire Knight Queelign is an invading NPC encounter, not a conventional dungeon or field boss.
