Note

Base-game location guide. This article covers Seethewater Cave in Elden Ring only. It does not include the surrounding Seethewater River ravine, Seethewater Terminus, Wyndham Ruins, Volcano Cave, Gelmir Hero’s Grave, or other Mt Gelmir locations except where they are useful for navigation.

Overview

Seethewater Cave is an optional poison-themed cave dungeon in the north-eastern part of Mt Gelmir. It lies in a ravine reached from the Seethewater River and is occupied by mushroom-clad Servants of Rot, rats, poison-producing flowers and other creatures associated with decay. Its route is short but unusually hazardous because much of the floor is covered by poison water, while several of the most useful rewards are placed in side chambers rather than on the direct route to the boss.

The cave’s main prizes are the complete Mushroom armour set, Poisonbone Darts, several poison-related consumables and the Kindred of Rot’s Exultation talisman. The final encounter is a pair of Kindred of Rot rather than a single boss. Seethewater Cave is therefore worth visiting even for players who are not following a poison or rot build, particularly because the talisman rewards fighting near poisoned or rotted enemies.

Location and boundaries

Seethewater Cave begins at its own fog-sealed entrance in the ravine north of the Seethewater River Site of Grace. The dungeon boundary starts inside the cave entrance, after the Stonesword Key seal, and ends beyond the boss mist gate in the Kindred of Rot arena.

The surrounding ravine is not part of the dungeon proper. It contains its own enemies, terrain and points of interest, and should be treated as a neighbouring outdoor area rather than as a subarea of Seethewater Cave. Likewise, Seethewater River and Seethewater Terminus are separate Sites of Grace and should not be merged into the cave’s directory.

Access and routes

Standard route from Altus Plateau

The entrance is not reached by climbing to Volcano Manor or by entering another dungeon. From the Seethewater River Site of Grace, the ravine provides the most direct approach.

Seethewater Cave is accessible as soon as you can reach Mt Gelmir and have the required Stonesword Keys, but its poison layout can punish unprepared characters.

Neutralizing Boluses are particularly valuable because the cave repeatedly forces the player through shallow poison water. The cave itself also contains poison-related supplies, including Poison Grease and poison ammunition, but these do not remove the need for a poison cure.

---

Standard route from Altus Plateau: The simplest normal approach is

  1. 01
Reach Mt Gelmir in the western Altus Plateau.
  2. 02
Travel to the Seethewater River Site of Grace.
  3. 03
    Follow the ravine northwards.
  4. 04
Look for the cave entrance along the ravine wall.
  5. 05
Use two Stonesword Keys at the imp statue.
  6. 06
Enter and activate the Seethewater Cave Site of Grace.

Geography and internal layout

Seethewater Cave is a compact, water-eroded cavern with a branching route. The direct path to the boss is not especially long, but the cave encourages backtracking because the Mushroom Set is in an optional side chamber.

The cave’s visual identity comes from stagnant water, hanging slime-like enemies, moss, poisonous flowers and kneeling mushroom-clad worshippers. The environment reinforces the association between the Servants of Rot and decaying underground spaces, although the cave’s active status effect is poison rather than Scarlet Rot.

The layout has four practical sections

  4. 04

Walkthrough

1. Activate the Site of Grace and enter the first chamber

After opening the imp seal, activate the Seethewater Cave Site of Grace immediately. A Summoning Pool is located near the entrance, making the dungeon suitable for cooperative assistance if required.

Proceed into the opening chamber and deal with the armoured soldier. The early enemy can be pulled away from the surrounding mushrooms rather than fought in the middle of several poison attacks. At the first fork, one branch leads to a relatively quick item detour, while the other continues towards the cave’s lower section.

2. Clear the first side branch

Take the short branch first if you want to collect the nearby moss and defeat the additional soldier before entering the more dangerous lower route. This is a useful place to establish the cave’s basic rhythm: enemies guard narrow passages, while poison-producing creatures can attack from positions that are difficult to see in the darkness.

Return to the fork and take the route towards the chasm. Collect the moss along the approach, then drop carefully onto the ledges below rather than jumping directly to the bottom.

3. Cross the poison-water section

The first significant drop places you in shallow poison water. The poison meter can rise quickly if you linger, so move decisively and avoid stopping to fight every enemy in the flooded passage.

There are Poisonbloom flowers along this route. They can be collected while moving through the water, but they are not worth taking damage for if the poison meter is already close to filling. Continue to the moss-covered area, where the terrain gives you a brief opportunity to recover and prepare for the next chamber.

Watch the ceiling. Slime-like enemies can drop down as you pass beneath them, turning an apparently safe patch of ground into an ambush. A cautious player can trigger them from a distance or simply sprint through after checking the ceiling.

4. Collect Poison Grease and reach the Mushroom Set chamber

Continue eastwards through the flooded route to a corpse carrying Poison Grease. More ceiling enemies are positioned along the approach, so do not assume that the corpse is safe simply because the path appears empty.

A side passage then leads to a chamber containing several Servants of Rot and a Giant Miranda Sprout. This is the most important optional room in the cave.

The Mushroom armour pieces are placed near the Giant Miranda Sprout. You can either:

The second approach is practical for low-level characters, but the Giant Miranda Sprout’s poison attacks and the mushroom enemies’ ranged projectiles can make the retreat dangerous. Ranged attacks are useful for drawing the Servants of Rot out individually. The Mushroom Set is found in this side room rather than in the boss area.

5. Return to the central route

After taking the side-room rewards, return to the earlier drop point and follow the route northwards. This passage contains additional moss and leads to a Stake of Marika, followed by a large chasm.

The chasm is navigated by dropping from ledge to ledge. The early drops are straightforward. Later, one gap requires a short jump to reach the opposite ledge. Do not simply walk off every platform, because the next safe landing is not always directly below you.

6. Gather Poisonbone Darts and the Golden Rune

One of the lower ledges contains rats and a corpse holding Poisonbone Darts. The narrow platform makes this encounter more dangerous than its enemy count suggests. Kill the rats before looting if you are carrying a large number of runes.

At the bottom of the chasm, follow the western dead-end passage to collect Golden Rune [6]. Then turn back and take the remaining route towards the boss mist. A separate Golden Rune [7] is also listed among the cave’s loot and can be collected before the final approach.

7. Defeat the Kindred of Rot

The boss arena contains two Kindred of Rot. They use ranged projectiles and close-range attacks, and the main danger is being pressured by both enemies at once.

The Kindred of Rot can be staggered and punished after their attacks, but greed is dangerous because the second enemy can interrupt an otherwise safe opening. Spirit Ashes can draw one target away, making the fight considerably easier. The boss encounter rewards Kindred of Rot’s Exultation and runes.

---

7. Defeat the Kindred of Rot: A reliable general plan is

  1. 01
    Enter and immediately create space.
  2. 02
    Keep both enemies within view.
  3. 03
Focus one Kindred of Rot until it is defeated.
  4. 04
Use the arena’s room to separate their attacks.
  5. 05
Roll towards or across ranged projectiles rather than retreating in a straight line.
  6. 06
Avoid allowing both enemies to surround you.

Enemies

The cave’s enemy population is built around poison, decay and ambushes. The exact arrangement of ordinary enemies is fixed for the dungeon, not procedural.

Named enemy directory

Different guides use slightly different labels for some of the cave’s enemies. In particular, “mushroom enemy”, “mushroom person” and “Servant of Rot” refer to the mushroom-clad humanoid enemies, while “poison flower” and “Miranda Sprout” refer to the plant enemies. The cave’s commonly listed enemy directory includes Leyndell Soldier, Servant of Rot, Putrid Flesh, Miranda Sprout, Giant Rat and Giant Miranda Sprout, with other guides also listing rats and Skeletal Slimes.

Practical enemy advice

Servants of Rot: Their ranged poison attacks are most threatening when several are alive. Pull them around corners or kill them from outside their effective range.

Miranda Sprouts: The Giant Miranda Sprout is the main plant threat in the Mushroom Set room. The room’s poison attacks can overlap with the Servants of Rot’s projectiles, so either attack from range or collect the set quickly and leave.

Slimes: Look above doorways and flooded passages. These enemies are easy to miss and can drop onto the player during a loot animation.

Rats: Rats are individually weak but dangerous on the narrow chasm ledges. Clear them before collecting Poisonbone Darts.

Kindred of Rot: The boss pair is more dangerous because of their numbers than because of a complicated arena. Prioritise one target and use summons if you want to reduce the pressure.

Items and collectibles

Equipment and permanent rewards

The Mushroom Set is the cave’s most distinctive collection reward. It is not obtained from the boss and is easy to miss if the player follows only the route leading to the chasm.

Consumables and crafting materials

Sources differ in how they name or group several minor pickups. Some list Immunizing Cured Meat, while others use a broader or inconsistent cured-meat listing. The fixed rewards consistently associated with the dungeon include Poison Grease, Poisonbone Darts, the Mushroom Set, Golden Runes and the Kindred of Rot’s Exultation.

Resource gathering

Seethewater Cave is a useful place to gather poison-related materials while progressing through the dungeon. Cave Moss and Crystal Cave Moss appear along the damp passages, while Poisonbloom and Miranda-related materials are found near the plant enemies.

These materials are not unlimited in a single clear, but many ordinary crafting materials respawn after resting. The guide evidence confirms their presence, but does not establish a special farming mechanic unique to Seethewater Cave, so they should be treated as ordinary world pickups rather than an exclusive dungeon resource system.

Checkpoints and facilities

Site of Grace

The Site of Grace is located near the entrance and should be activated before exploring the flooded passages.

Summoning Pool

The Summoning Pool is near the entrance. It is useful for calling co-operators before attempting the Kindred of Rot encounter.

Stake of Marika

The Stake of Marika is positioned before the final chasm and provides a nearby retry point for players who die during the lower route or boss attempt.

Services absent from the cave

There is no verified evidence of any of the following inside Seethewater Cave:

The cave’s “facilities” are therefore limited to its Site of Grace, Summoning Pool and Stake of Marika.

Hazards and secrets

Poison water

The poison water is the dungeon’s defining hazard. It is usually better to move through it quickly than to stop and fight every enemy. If the poison meter is nearly full, retreat to a dry patch rather than waiting for the status effect to trigger.

Ceiling ambushes

Several slime-like enemies are positioned above the route. Look up before looting corpses, especially in the flooded side passage.

Optional Mushroom Set route

The Mushroom Set is the cave’s major secret in practical terms. It is not hidden behind an illusory wall, but it is placed in a side chamber that can be bypassed. Players who head directly towards the chasm can complete the dungeon without ever entering the flower-filled room.

Chasm navigation

The lower descent is not a puzzle, but it is a fall hazard. Use the ledges methodically. The final crossing is a jump rather than a simple drop, and missing it can result in death or a long run back from the Stake of Marika.

No known missable quest state

No quest NPC or quest progression event is tied to Seethewater Cave in the base game. The cave’s enemies and rewards are ordinary persistent dungeon content. The main practical missable is not a progression state but the optional side-room loot, particularly the Mushroom Set.

Lore and themes

Seethewater Cave’s environmental storytelling centres on the relationship between poison, decay and the beings who venerate rot. The Servants of Rot appear throughout the cave in the company of poisonous plants and stagnant water. Their presence gives the dungeon a ritual quality, especially in the chamber where they kneel around the Giant Miranda Sprout.

The Mushroom armour description connects the set with those consumed by Scarlet Rot and presents the mushroom growth as a kind of vestment. In Seethewater Cave, however, the active environmental ailment is poison. This distinction is important: the cave visually and thematically resembles rot-tainted locations, but it should not be described as a Scarlet Rot dungeon without qualification.

The boss reward, Kindred of Rot’s Exultation, further connects the dungeon to the Kindred of Rot and their power gained when poison or rot occurs nearby. This makes the cave’s enemy composition and reward thematically coherent: the player passes through a poison-filled shrine-like environment and defeats two of the creatures associated with its rot-centred worship.

The wider Mt Gelmir context is also relevant. The cave sits beneath the volcanic region ruled from Volcano Manor, but it has no direct quest dialogue linking it to Praetor Rykard, Tanith or the Recusants. Any connection between the cave’s Servants of Rot and Volcano Manor should therefore be treated as environmental juxtaposition, not established faction membership.
