About this guide

Scope: Elden Ring base game, Limgrave Location type: Minor dungeon and NPC hub Major spoiler warning: This guide covers Sorceress Sellen’s questline, including later changes to her location and role.

Overview

Waypoint Ruins is a small but important ruin complex in eastern Limgrave, positioned on the eastern side of Agheel Lake. It is easy to mistake the name for a broader district, but Waypoint Ruins properly refers to the ruined buildings and the cellar beneath them. The nearby lake, roads, caravans, Minor Erdtree, Dragon-Burnt Ruins and Witchbane Ruins are separate locations, even though they form part of the same early-game exploration route.

The ruins have two distinct layers. Above ground is a collapsed settlement occupied by poisonous Miranda Sprouts and a larger Miranda Blossom. Beneath it is the Waypoint Ruins Cellar, a compact combat room guarded by Mad Pumpkin Head. Once the boss is defeated, the cellar becomes a Site of Grace and provides access to Sorceress Sellen, one of the game’s most useful early sorcery teachers and a major character in a later questline.

Waypoint Ruins is optional, but it is one of the most valuable early detours for Intelligence-focused characters. It also introduces a quest character whose story eventually connects Limgrave with Caelid, Mt Gelmir, Liurnia and the Academy of Raya Lucaria.

Geography and boundaries

Waypoint Ruins stands on a low, broken rise east of Agheel Lake. The ruined walls are visible from the surrounding road, although the vegetation and collapsed masonry can obscure the entrance to the cellar. The site is close enough to the lake that it is often used as part of an Agheel Lake route, but it is not itself part of the lake area.

The road near the ruins leads between several separate Limgrave landmarks. Travelling north brings you towards the road network and the bridge leading into eastern Limgrave. Travelling south connects with routes towards the Weeping Peninsula. Agheel Lake and Dragon-Burnt Ruins lie to the west and north-west, while the Minor Erdtree and Mistwood are further east. These are neighbouring destinations rather than subareas of Waypoint Ruins.

Nearby but separate

The distinction matters most for Sellen’s quest. The Sellen encountered in Waypoint Ruins is connected to later appearances elsewhere, but Witchbane Ruins is not an extension of the Waypoint cellar. It is a separate ruin complex with its own entrance, enemies and quest state.

How to reach Waypoint Ruins

The simplest route is to begin at a Site of Grace around western or central Limgrave and follow the road towards Agheel Lake. From the lake’s eastern side, look for the ruined buildings on higher ground beside the road.

You do not need to defeat Flying Dragon Agheel to reach Waypoint Ruins. If the dragon is active in the lake, ride around the shoreline or approach from the eastern road. Torrent is useful for crossing the open ground quickly, but the ruins themselves are cramped and are better explored on foot.

The visible ruin is not the main objective. Search the broken buildings for the opening leading down to the cellar. The entrance is a stairway beneath the surface ruins, and the boss fog lies at the bottom.

Surface ruins

The surface area is a small cluster of broken stone structures overgrown with vegetation. Miranda Sprouts occupy the approach and can release poisonous clouds. The larger Miranda Blossom is more dangerous because of its greater reach, health and poison pressure.

The ruins are not a conventional military camp. There are no major fortifications, named soldiers or merchant facilities here. The main challenge is environmental control: narrow spaces, obscured sightlines and poison clouds make it easy to lose health while searching the rubble.

Surface enemies

Miranda enemies are vulnerable to fire, making fire pots, fire grease and fire-based skills useful if available. Keep moving around the plants rather than standing in the poison cloud. The larger blossom should be treated as the priority target if several enemies are active.

The surface contains no known resident NPC, shop or functioning business. Its importance comes from the cellar below rather than from a separate reward structure.

Waypoint Ruins Cellar

The cellar is a short dungeon with a single principal encounter. Its entrance leads to a compact chamber where Mad Pumpkin Head acts as the guard. Defeating him opens the way to the rear room, where Sorceress Sellen is found.

The cellar is not a route to another region and does not contain a branching dungeon network. Its structure is deliberately simple: descend, defeat the guardian, open the rear door and meet Sellen.

Checkpoint

After Mad Pumpkin Head is defeated, the Waypoint Ruins Cellar Site of Grace becomes available. This checkpoint is useful because it places the player directly beside Sellen’s chamber and provides a convenient return point for later dialogue.

The Site of Grace is not normally available before the boss encounter. This makes the cellar’s progression state straightforward:

Checkpoint

  1. 01
    Enter the cellar.
  2. 02
    Defeat Mad Pumpkin Head.
  3. 03
    Open the rear door.
  4. 04
Activate or use the newly available Site of Grace.
  5. 05
    Speak with Sorceress Sellen.

Mad Pumpkin Head

Mad Pumpkin Head is the optional boss of Waypoint Ruins. Although Pumpkin Head enemies appear elsewhere as ordinary enemies, this one functions as the cellar’s boss and blocks access to Sellen. Eldenpedia lists the encounter at 1,328 HP and 1,100 runes, with the Pumpkin Helm as a possible drop.

The fight takes place in a small room. Mad Pumpkin Head’s helmeted head has unusually strong damage resistance, so attacks aimed at the body are generally more effective than repeatedly striking the head. The flail has considerable reach, but the boss turns slowly and can be circled at close range.

Practical tactics

The Pumpkin Helm is not guaranteed. It is a random enemy drop rather than the fixed reward for completing the dungeon.

Sorceress Sellen

Sorceress Sellen is the main reason to visit Waypoint Ruins. She is found behind the door beyond Mad Pumpkin Head and initially presents herself as a teacher of glintstone sorcery. To unlock her services, speak with her and choose the dialogue option expressing a desire to learn glintstone sorceries. She then grants the Nod in Thought gesture and opens her spell shop.

Sellen’s early shop includes several useful spells for Intelligence builds:

These prices and the initial shop inventory are listed in guides covering her Waypoint Ruins appearance.

The shop is particularly useful for characters who did not begin as an Astrologer. Glintstone Pebble provides a cheap general-purpose projectile, Glintstone Arc can hit groups, and Scholar’s Armament adds magic damage to a compatible weapon. Scholar’s Shield improves the blocking efficiency of a shield, which can be useful for a hybrid spellcaster.

Sellen’s role in progression

Waypoint Ruins is the first major step in Sellen’s questline. Later stages involve her other locations, including Witchbane Ruins and areas connected to Primeval Sorcerer Azur, Primeval Sorcerer Lusat, Jerren and the Academy. Those locations should be treated as separate entries rather than as extensions of Waypoint Ruins.

The Waypoint version of Sellen can change or disappear as her quest progresses. This is not a separate NPC in the ordinary sense, but a progression state of the same character and story. If Sellen is no longer in the cellar, check the other quest locations and the stage of her storyline rather than assuming the area has failed to load.

Enemies and hazards directory

Fixed enemies and encounters

The surface plants are fixed environmental enemies, while the boss is a one-time encounter for the current playthrough. Ordinary enemies return after resting or reloading as normal.

Main hazards

Poison resistance is helpful but not essential. The most reliable precaution is to avoid lingering beside the plants after they release their cloud. If poison builds up, retreat to clear the status rather than continuing to trade damage.

Items and rewards

The most important rewards are access-based rather than treasure-based.

Verified rewards and acquisitions

The site is therefore more valuable for its NPC services and progression than for a large collection of fixed loot. Be cautious about attributing nearby Limgrave items to Waypoint Ruins. Items around Agheel Lake, the road, the caravan route and neighbouring ruins belong to those separate areas.

Recommended exploration route

For a fast Sellen visit, it is possible to ride directly to the ruins, enter the cellar and ignore most surface enemies. For a first completion, clearing the plants is safer because it gives room to retreat if poison begins to build.

For a clean first visit

  1. 01
Approach from the eastern side of Agheel Lake and locate the ruins on the rise beside the road.
  2. 02
Clear or bypass the Miranda Sprouts around the outer walls.
  3. 03
Deal with the Miranda Blossom from outside its poison range where possible.
  4. 04
Search the broken structures for the cellar stairs.
  5. 05
Enter the cellar and prepare for Mad Pumpkin Head.
  6. 06
Circle the boss and attack the body rather than relying on head strikes.
  7. 07
Collect the boss reward and check whether the Pumpkin Helm dropped.
  8. 08
Open the rear door and speak with Sorceress Sellen.
  9. 09
Select the option to learn glintstone sorceries.
  10. 10
Purchase any early spells that suit your build.
  11. 11
Activate the Waypoint Ruins Cellar Site of Grace.
  12. 12
Return later when following Sellen’s questline.

Lore and significance

Waypoint Ruins presents a useful contrast between the surface and the cellar. Above ground, the ruins are being reclaimed by aggressive plant life. Below ground, a powerful sorceress has established a hidden teaching chamber behind a monstrous guardian. The arrangement reinforces one of Elden Ring’s recurring patterns: apparently minor ruins can conceal characters and histories far more important than the visible architecture suggests.

Sellen’s dialogue also establishes her connection to the Academy of Raya Lucaria. She describes herself as a former sorcerer of the Academy and offers to teach the player, making Waypoint Ruins one of the earliest locations where the game’s broader sorcery tradition becomes accessible. Her story later expands this introduction into a conflict involving forbidden research, exiled sorcerers and rival claims to the legacy of primeval glintstone sorcery.
