Key takeaways

  • There are several ways in You can approach from the Altus Plateau and Wyndham area, follow the Seethewater River, climb from the Road of Iniquity, be transported to Volcano Manor by Rya, or be abducted by an Abductor Virgin.
  • Do not treat Volcano Manor as the whole region The mountain circuit also includes Fort Laiedd, the Hermit Village, Primeval Sorcerer Azur, the Minor Erdtree, Gelmir Hero’s Grave and several smaller caves.
  • Explore the western and southern routes before finishing Volcano Manor Volcano Manor’s contracts and NPC stories can be missed or shortened if you kill Rykard too early.
  • The region has multiple distinct lava areas Seethewater River, Fort Laiedd, the Manor’s Prison Town and the subterranean Inquisition Chamber are connected thematically, but they are separate spaces with different enemies and rewards.
  • The most important non-boss rewards include Comet Azur, the Fire Scorpion Charm, the Magma Wyrm’s Scalesword, the Gelmir Glintstone Staff, the Raptor’s Black Feathers and the Serpentbone Blade.
  • Mount Gelmir is optional for the main route, but Rykard is a Shardbearer and the area contains quest progression, powerful equipment and one of the game’s strongest sorceries.

About this guide

Scope: Base game Elden Ring. “Mount Gelmir” here means the open-world sub-region of the Altus Plateau and the named locations commonly grouped with it, including Volcano Manor and its associated dungeon spaces. Nearby locations such as Wyndham Ruins, the Altus Plateau roads and the shaded parts of the Manor’s approach are treated as neighbouring connections rather than being silently absorbed into the mountain.

Overview

Mount Gelmir is the volcanic western edge of the Altus Plateau. It is less a conventional road through the mountains than a sequence of cliffs, ravines, lava fields, military ruins and misleading dead ends that eventually converge on Volcano Manor. Its geography explains much of its design: the safest-looking routes are often blocked by cliffs, while apparently inaccessible areas are reached by circling the volcano, climbing ladders or using narrow jumps.

The region contains a broad open-world circuit, several caves and catacombs, a legacy dungeon, a major optional demigod encounter, one of the game’s most important sorcerers, and a concentration of assassination missions tied to Volcano Manor. It is also a region where progression order matters. Entering Volcano Manor, accepting Tanith’s invitation or defeating Rykard can change the availability of characters, dialogue and contracts.

Mount Gelmir is a sub-region of the Altus Plateau, not a separate main region. The volcano occupies the west of Altus and is bordered by the Seethewater River, Wyndham area and the northern Altus roads. The official map description characterises it as a mountain of sheer cliffs and ominous skies, while the in-game history identifies it as the site of the devastating assault on Volcano Manor during the Shattering.

Core open-world Mount Gelmir

This includes the volcanic mountain roads and slopes, the Seethewater routes, the military encampments, the Hermit Village, Craftsman’s Shack and the approach to Volcano Manor.

Volcano Manor

Volcano Manor is both a landmark and a legacy dungeon within Mount Gelmir. The manor itself contains an NPC hub, locked rooms, a hidden dungeon route and access to Prison Town Church, Temple of Eiglay and the Audience Pathway. The Volcano Manor page lists Godskin Noble and Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, as its bosses.

Named dungeons commonly grouped with Mount Gelmir

These are not interchangeable with Volcano Manor. Each has its own entrance, layout, boss or reward structure.

Nearby but separate locations

The following places are important when navigating to Mount Gelmir but should not be treated as parts of the mountain proper:

Wyndham Ruins are particularly important as a route landmark. From the ruins, the Seethewater River leads north-west towards the base of Mount Gelmir.

---

Mount Gelmir is built around a rough loop.

The eastern approach rises from the Altus Plateau and leads towards the Bridge of Iniquity, the First Mount Gelmir Campsite and the military remnants of the old assault.

The northern and western sides are dominated by the Seethewater River. This is a hostile ravine filled with boiling vents, fire-based enemies and narrow paths. The river ends near Fort Laiedd, where Leyndell soldiers remain in conflict with Fire Monks.

The southern and south-eastern side contains the Hermit Village, Craftsman’s Shack, Hermit’s Shack and Primeval Sorcerer Azur. This is the most important side route for sorcery characters because it contains Comet Azur and leads towards Sorceress Sellen’s quest.

The upper route climbs towards Volcano Manor. The mountain road is marked by ladders, scarred campsites, corpses and soldiers driven mad by the battle. The area’s visual storytelling is unusually direct: the battlefield is not merely described in item text, but left physically scattered across the slopes.

The region’s location list and Sites of Grace are documented together on the Mount Gelmir regional page.

Named open-world locations

Route 1: The eastern mountain road

From the Altus Plateau, follow the road west towards the Bridge of Iniquity. This route gives access to the First Mount Gelmir Campsite and the ladders leading into the mountain.

This is the intended scenic route, but it is not the only route.

A practical route is

  1. 01
    Reach the Bridge of Iniquity.
  2. 02
Follow the road west and north-west.
  3. 03
Pass the soldiers and Abductor Virgins.
  4. 04
Look for the large ladder on the cliff face.
  5. 05
Climb towards the First Mount Gelmir Campsite.
  6. 06
Continue through the battlefield and around the mountain.
  7. 07
Use the Ninth Mount Gelmir Campsite as a staging point before the Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast.
  8. 08
Continue towards the Road of Iniquity and Volcano Manor.

Route 2: The Seethewater River

From Erdtree-Gazing Hill or the Wyndham area, travel north-west past Wyndham Ruins and enter the river channel. The Seethewater River Site of Grace is an early stopping point, followed by the Seethewater Cave entrance and the Seethewater Terminus.

This route is often the most useful for players seeking Comet Azur or the Fire Scorpion Charm before entering Volcano Manor.

The river route eventually reaches

Route 3: Rya’s invitation

If you progress Rya’s quest and reach the Altus Plateau, she can offer transportation to Volcano Manor. This places you at the manor without requiring the mountain climb. The Manor’s normal approaches are either travelling across Mount Gelmir or accepting Rya’s transport.

This shortcut does not complete the surrounding region. You still need to leave the manor and explore the Seethewater and Hermit Village sides separately.

Route 4: Abductor Virgin transport

An Abductor Virgin beneath the waterwheel at the Academy of Raya Lucaria can transport the player to the Subterranean Inquisition Chamber if its grab attack kills them. This is an unusual progression route rather than a reliable first-time entrance, and it places the player in a dangerous underground area associated with Volcano Manor. The transport method is documented in contemporary walkthrough coverage of the region.

Open-world Sites of Grace

The regional list includes the principal Mount Gelmir checkpoints and dungeon entrances.

Open-world Sites of Grace

Volcano Manor Sites of Grace

The manor’s Sites of Grace are separate from the open-world route and reflect the dungeon’s internal progression.

Volcano Manor Sites of Grace

Fort Laiedd

Fort Laiedd stands at the end of the Seethewater River. Fire Monks and Leyndell forces are engaged in a continuing conflict around it. The fort contains fire-themed enemies, a Fire Prelate encounter and the Fire Scorpion Charm.

The fort is one of the clearest examples of Mount Gelmir’s military history. It is not merely a ruin populated by random enemies: its occupants show that the conflict between the capital and the Fire Monks remains active.

Hermit Village

Hermit Village is a settlement of demi-humans and sorcerers on the south-eastern side of the volcano. It is the route to Demi-Human Queen Maggie and Primeval Sorcerer Azur.

The village is also important to the history of sorcery. Azur is found beyond it, separated from the main settlement by a dangerous path.

Craftsman’s Shack

Craftsman’s Shack sits on the southern circuit. It has its own Site of Grace and contains the Jar cannon. It is a useful rest point when travelling between Fort Laiedd, Hermit Village and the upper mountain.

Hermit’s Shack

Hermit’s Shack is a small landmark on the same southern route. It is associated with hostile inhabitants and valuable equipment rather than a conventional shop or service.

Corpse-Stench Shack

Corpse-Stench Shack lies on the approach to Volcano Manor. It is associated with a hostile encounter and the Raptor’s Black Feathers, a chest piece used by jump-attack builds.

Minor Erdtree

The Mount Gelmir Minor Erdtree stands in the southern portion of the region. Its guardian is an Ulcerated Tree Spirit. The reward includes the Crimsonspill Crystal Tear and Speckled Hardtear.

---

Volcano Manor is the political and narrative centre of Mount Gelmir. It is the home of Praetor Rykard’s recusants, led by Tanith. The manor opposes the Erdtree and the Roundtable, and its members hunt Tarnished rather than following the conventional path of becoming Elden Lord.

Manor residents

Some characters appear only after accepting Tanith’s offer. Patches, Bernahl and Diallos can move into the manor according to quest progression. Their presence is therefore state-dependent rather than a permanent feature from the moment the player arrives.

Manor residents

What the manor offers

Volcano Manor has no normal shopkeeper in the usual sense. Tanith provides contracts, not general merchandise. Completing contracts awards weapons, armour and access to further dialogue.

Do not assume that accepting the invitation permanently commits the player to the recusants. The important choice is usually whether to complete the contracts and when to defeat Rykard.

Manor progression warning

Major spoiler: Defeating Rykard can end or advance several Volcano Manor character sequences. To see the intended contract chain, complete the available assignments before killing him. The Manor guide specifically warns that players should delay Rykard until the relevant NPC invasions and contracts have been completed.

---

A safe order is

  1. 01
Speak to Tanith and accept the invitation.
  2. 02
    Collect the first red letter.
  3. 03
Complete the Old Knight Istvan invasion.
  4. 04
Return to Tanith for the reward.
  5. 05
Complete the later contracts as they become available.
  6. 06
Speak to Rya and progress her story before the final contract.
  7. 07
    Complete the Bernahl-related invasion.
  8. 08
    Complete Juno Hoslow’s invasion.
  9. 09
Only then decide whether to fight Rykard.

Residents and associated NPCs

Visitors and travelling quest characters

Alexander’s appearance near Fort Laiedd is one stage in his travelling quest. He is not a permanent resident, and his position can change as his storyline progresses.

---

Volcano Manor recusants

The recusants reject the Erdtree’s authority and hunt Tarnished. They are the dominant faction at the summit and in the Manor’s narrative.

Leyndell forces

Leyndell soldiers occupy the mountain roads and battlefield camps. The environmental evidence suggests a failed or broken assault rather than an organised living garrison. Some soldiers appear frenzied, reflecting the lore surrounding the battle for Volcano Manor.

Fire Monks

Fire Monks are concentrated around Fort Laiedd and the western Seethewater approach. Their conflict with Leyndell is one of the region’s clearest active factional struggles.

Demi-humans and serpent-men

Demi-humans dominate Hermit Village and Volcano Cave. Serpent-men are strongly associated with Volcano Manor and its prison settlement. Their presence marks the transition from the ordinary mountain to Rykard’s domain.

---

Open-world and dungeon bosses

The precise boundary of some boss lists depends on whether the nearby Wyndham and subterranean areas are classified as Altus Plateau or Mount Gelmir. For this guide, Wyndham Ruins is treated as a neighbouring approach, while Wyndham Catacombs is included because regional location lists group it with Mount Gelmir.

Open-world and dungeon bosses

Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast

The Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast is fought in a large arena near the Ninth Mount Gelmir Campsite. Torrent is especially useful because the arena allows room for mounted movement. Its encounter rewards the Fallingstar Beast Jaw and runes.

Demi-Human Queen Maggie

Maggie guards the approach to Azur. Sorcerers may prefer to bypass or summon help for the encounter, as the surrounding Glintstone Sorcerers can complicate the fight.

Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy

Rykard is the region’s major boss and a Shardbearer. His fight is designed around the Serpent-Hunter, which is found inside the arena. The weapon’s special attacks are unusually effective against him, making it the intended solution rather than an ordinary equipment check.

The boss is optional for the main storyline, but defeating him is required for his Great Rune and the full conclusion of the Volcano Manor arc.

---

Notable unique rewards

The region also contains ordinary smithing materials, crafting resources, Golden Seeds, Sacred Tears and consumables. Drops from common enemies should be treated as random or chance-based rather than fixed collectibles.

Notable unique rewards

Important acquisition notes

Comet Azur

Find Primeval Sorcerer Azur beyond Hermit Village. The spell is obtained directly from the sorcerer and is one of the central rewards of the southern route. It is also required for the major progression branch of Sorceress Sellen’s quest.

Fire Scorpion Charm

Search Fort Laiedd. The talisman increases fire damage while lowering damage negation, making it particularly relevant to fire, magma and Volcano Manor builds.

Jar Cannon

The Jar Cannon is found at Craftsman’s Shack. It is a heavy ranged weapon with high strength requirements and limited ammunition economy, but it is one of Mount Gelmir’s most distinctive fixed rewards.

Fallingstar Beast Jaw

Defeat the Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast near the Ninth Mount Gelmir Campsite. The weapon is especially notable for its gravity-themed skill.

Serpentbone Blade

Complete the relevant Volcano Manor contract chain. It is not a random drop from ordinary serpent-men.

---

Volcano Manor contracts

These are the main repeatable activity in Mount Gelmir. Each contract points to an invasion target elsewhere in the Lands Between. The target is not necessarily physically present in the Manor, and the task may require travelling far outside the region.

Named contract targets associated with the Manor include:

The exact availability depends on Manor progression, the player’s position in other questlines and whether Rykard has been defeated.

Sorceress Sellen and Primeval Sorcerer Azur

Finding Azur advances Sellen’s storyline and provides Comet Azur. This makes Mount Gelmir important even for players who have no interest in Volcano Manor.

A practical sequence is

  1. 01
    Reach Hermit Village.
  2. 02
Defeat or bypass Demi-Human Queen Maggie.
  3. 03
Find Azur at the end of the path.
  4. 04
Interact with Azur to receive Comet Azur.
  5. 05
Return to Sellen and continue her quest.

Alexander

Alexander can be encountered near Fort Laiedd. This is a temporary stop in his broader questline. If he is not present, his quest may have advanced elsewhere.

Rya

Rya’s story connects Liurnia, Altus Plateau and Volcano Manor. Her position and dialogue change according to whether the player has reached Altus, accepted Tanith’s invitation and progressed the Manor’s contracts.

---

Lava and heat vents

Lava pools cause rapid damage and may stagger the player. The bubbling vents along Seethewater can also launch damaging bursts. Torrent is helpful for crossing exposed ground, but mounting does not make lava harmless.

Vertical navigation

The mountain uses ladders and cliff paths heavily. If a route seems blocked, search for:

Rainbow Stone trap

The road near Volcano Manor contains a famous trap associated with Patches. Following the stones can lead to a cliffside ambush and a fall. This encounter is missable or altered if Patches has moved to the Manor or if his earlier quest state is different.

Hidden manor wall

Inside Volcano Manor, one apparently solid wall conceals a passage. This opens the prison-town route and is easy to miss if the player treats the Manor only as an NPC hub.

Abductor Virgin transport

The Abductor Virgin route from Raya Lucaria is a deliberate but dangerous shortcut. It is more useful for discovery, challenge runs or players who want to reach the Manor’s underground spaces early than for a normal first approach.

Before leaving Mount Gelmir

---

Mount Gelmir’s defining historical event is Leyndell’s assault on Volcano Manor during the Shattering. The landscape preserves the consequences: ruined camps, hanging bodies, abandoned equipment and soldiers who have lost their reason. The battle is described in the game as one of the most appalling conflicts of the Shattering.

Volcano Manor represents Rykard’s rejection of the Golden Order. After consuming the blasphemous serpent, Rykard becomes both ruler and devourer, while Tanith maintains the Manor and recruits recusants. The contracts turn the player against other Tarnished and invert the usual quest structure. Instead of hunting monsters for the Erdtree’s sake, the player hunts Tarnished in opposition to it.

The mountain’s other communities reflect different forms of exile and resistance. The Fire Monks remain opposed to the forces of the capital. The Hermit Village shelters demi-humans and sorcerers. Azur, one of the founding Glintstone Sorcerers, is found beyond the village after his banishment from Raya Lucaria. The result is a region united less by government than by the fact that its inhabitants have been pushed away from the Erdtree, the Academy or ordinary civilisation.

---

Is Mount Gelmir required?

No. The region is optional for reaching the end of the base game, although Rykard is a Shardbearer and defeating him provides a Great Rune and major rewards.

Is Volcano Manor separate from Mount Gelmir?

It is a child area within Mount Gelmir rather than a completely separate overworld region. It is also a legacy dungeon with its own internal map structure and progression.

Can I reach Volcano Manor without climbing Mount Gelmir?

Yes. Rya can transport you there after you reach the Altus Plateau, and an Abductor Virgin can transport you to the subterranean area through a special death route. You can also travel there normally across the mountain.

The most commonly missed high-value content is

Should I kill Rykard immediately?

Not if you want the full Volcano Manor experience. Finish the contracts and related dialogue first. Defeating Rykard can advance or terminate Manor-related progression.

Why can I see places that I cannot reach directly?

Mount Gelmir is designed as a looping vertical region. Many visible ledges are reached from another side of the volcano, often through Seethewater, Hermit Village or a ladder route from the eastern approach.

---

Research and boundary notes

The main regional boundary is well established: Mount Gelmir is a western Altus Plateau sub-region centred on Volcano Manor. The main uncertainty concerns classification of border locations, particularly Wyndham Ruins and some subterranean spaces. This guide treats Wyndham Ruins as a neighbouring approach while including Wyndham Catacombs in the Mount Gelmir directory because regional location lists group it there. The game’s own map and location taxonomy do not always present a modern wiki-style hierarchy, so classifications can vary between guides.

Some ordinary enemy populations and chance-based drops have deliberately not been presented as exhaustive item tables. Their presence and rewards can vary by enemy type, placement and drop chance. Fixed named rewards, bosses, NPCs, Sites of Grace and named locations are prioritised because they are more useful for navigation and progression.
