Key takeaways
- Ailing Village is in the Weeping Peninsula, on a wooded plateau north of Castle Morne and east of the peninsula’s central Minor Erdtree.
- The named area has three practical components Ailing Village, Ailing Village Outskirts, and Callu Baptismal Church.
- The village’s residents are Frenzied Commoners, supported by rats Their attacks build Madness, so repeated hits and surrounded encounters are more dangerous than their appearance suggests.
- The most valuable rewards are The Flame of Frenzy, Sacred Tear, Flame Crest Wooden Shield and Lightning Strike.
- There is no boss, NPC quest or shop in the village.
- Do not confuse it with Frenzied Flame Village in Liurnia or Abandoned Ailing Village in the Realm of Shadow.
About this guide
Scope: Base-game Elden Ring, including the named immediate locations that are commonly grouped with Ailing Village: Ailing Village, Ailing Village Outskirts, and the neighbouring Callu Baptismal Church. The guide does not include the similarly named Frenzied Flame Village in Liurnia or Abandoned Ailing Village from Shadow of the Erdtree.
Overview
Ailing Village is a small, ruined settlement in the Weeping Peninsula, south of Limgrave proper and north of Castle Morne. Its inhabitants have been overcome by the Frenzied Flame and attack anyone who enters. The settlement is not a dungeon and has no boss, merchant or quest-giver, but it is one of the earliest places where the game presents Frenzy as a local environmental threat rather than merely as a rare spell or late-game story force.
The village itself is only one part of the wider point of interest. The nearby Ailing Village Outskirts Site of Grace provides the main checkpoint, while Callu Baptismal Church, directly south of the settlement, contains the area’s most important rewards: The Flame of Frenzy incantation and a Sacred Tear. A careful visit also yields the Flame Crest Wooden Shield, several Golden Runes, crafting materials and the Lightning Strike incantation from a Teardrop Scarab in the adjacent ravine.
Area boundaries and hierarchy
The core location: Ailing Village
The Ailing Village proper is the cluster of dilapidated houses and central gathering area on the upper part of the plateau. The most recognisable feature is the group of Frenzied Commoners gathered around a central fire or pyre. The settlement is small enough to cross quickly, but its buildings, side paths and surrounding trees make it easy to be attacked from several directions at once.
The village contains the Flame Crest Wooden Shield, found on a corpse inside a house on the eastern side of the settlement. It is the principal item placed within the village itself.
Ailing Village Outskirts
Ailing Village Outskirts is a distinct named Site of Grace north of the main settlement. It is not a separate dungeon or enclosed sub-area. It functions as the area’s checkpoint and is positioned on the approach around the village rather than in its central buildings.
Activating it is worthwhile even if the aim is only to reach Callu Baptismal Church. It shortens the return journey after death and gives a safe point from which to approach the village from different angles. Guides place it on the northern side of the plateau, with a small campsite and a corpse holding a Golden Rune [2] nearby.
Callu Baptismal Church
Callu Baptismal Church stands immediately south of Ailing Village. It is a separate named landmark rather than part of the village’s building cluster, but it is closely tied to the settlement and should be treated as part of the same exploration circuit.
The ruined church contains a Sacred Tear at the base of its statue and The Flame of Frenzy on a corpse inside the building. It is occupied by rats, including a Giant Rat, and can be more dangerous than the village if the player enters without first checking the interior.
Places not included
The following are separate locations and should not be merged into Ailing Village:
The similarly named Liurnian village contains different enemies, geography and progression material, including its association with Vyke. The DLC’s Abandoned Ailing Village is also a separate location and is not part of the base-game settlement.
Ailing Village sits in a forested upland area of the Weeping Peninsula. The terrain rises above the nearby roads and lowlands, which helps explain why the settlement is reached by following an uphill route rather than simply staying on the main road.
The village is also east of the Weeping Peninsula’s central Minor Erdtree. Several guides describe it as lying within dense woodland on a plateau north of Castle Morne Rampart.
Named locations in and around the area
Nearby but separate locations
The last group should not be counted as part of Ailing Village. They are useful route references within the Weeping Peninsula, but each is an independent location.
Core and directly associated locations
Nearby but separate locations
From Castle Morne Rampart
This is the clearest early-game route.
The route can be approached directly, but new characters may find it safer to activate the grace first and then explore the village in short excursions.
From Castle Morne Rampart: steps
- 01Begin at Castle Morne Rampart.
- 02Follow the elevated route westwards, keeping to the upper path rather than descending towards the lower road.
- 03Continue through the woodland and watch for Frenzied enemies and rats.
- 04Look for the route leading north towards Ailing Village Outskirts.
- 05Activate the Site of Grace before entering the settlement.
- 06From the grace, approach the village and then descend or circle south to reach Callu Baptismal Church.
From the Minor Erdtree
From the Weeping Peninsula Minor Erdtree, travel east through the wooded terrain and look for the plateau containing the settlement. This route is useful if the player is already exploring the centre of the peninsula, though the Castle Morne Rampart approach gives clearer landmarks.
Suggested exploration route
For a first visit, the following order is efficient:
This order places the Site of Grace between each major risk and avoids having to cross the entire settlement after an unsuccessful attempt.
Suggested exploration route: steps
- 01Reach Ailing Village Outskirts and activate the grace.
- 02Search the nearby campsite for the Golden Rune [2], if it has not already been collected.
- 03Enter the village from the northern or western side.
- 04Deal with the outer Frenzied Commoners before approaching the central fire.
- 05Search the eastern house for the Flame Crest Wooden Shield.
- 06Leave by the southern side and enter Callu Baptismal Church.
- 07Kill or evade the rats.
- 08Collect The Flame of Frenzy from the corpse.
- 09Collect the Sacred Tear from the base of the statue.
- 10Continue south-west only if you also want to obtain Lightning Strike from the nearby Teardrop Scarab.
Frenzied Commoners
The village’s main inhabitants are Frenzied Commoners, sometimes described in guides as Frenzied Villagers. Their yellow, feverish eyes and erratic behaviour indicate their connection to Frenzy. They are not ordinary neutral villagers and cannot be spoken to.
Their individual attacks are not especially powerful, but they become dangerous when several commoners attack together. The player can be staggered, surrounded or forced to remain within range long enough for Madness to trigger.
Rats
Rats appear around the village and are especially prominent inside Callu Baptismal Church. Their low health makes them easy to dismiss, but they can interrupt item collection or healing while the player is already dealing with Frenzied enemies.
The church contains a Giant Rat as well as smaller rats. Several sources list Golden Runes and other possible enemy drops associated with the church’s rat encounters. These are enemy drops rather than guaranteed named treasure placements and should be treated separately from the area’s fixed rewards.
Enemies directory
Ailing Village and approach
Some route guides also describe ordinary rats or Frenzied rats in the surrounding approach, but enemy placement can be easy to misread at the boundary between the village, its outskirts and the church. The reliable common theme is that the settlement and church are populated by hostile humans and rats rather than by a boss or named invader.
Ailing Village is an early warning that Frenzy is not only a late-game story theme. The enemies here build Madness, a status effect that damages the player and temporarily leaves them vulnerable when the meter fills. Frenzied enemies can therefore be much more threatening in groups than their modest health and damage suggest.
The village itself does not use the large, persistent Frenzy towers found in the Liurnian Frenzied Flame area. The immediate danger comes from enemy attacks and the pressure of fighting several afflicted villagers at once. This is an important distinction between Ailing Village and Frenzied Flame Village.
Central pyre
The central fire is the visual and thematic focus of the settlement. Frenzied Commoners gather around it, making it a natural ambush point. It is not a boss arena and does not trigger a named encounter.
Ruined houses
The houses are mostly scenery and combat cover. One eastern house contains the corpse with the Flame Crest Wooden Shield. The other buildings should still be checked for ordinary corpses, crafting materials and visual clues, but the settlement does not function as a living town.
Callu Baptismal Church
The church is the area’s most important building. Its ruined state, rat infestation and Frenzy-related rewards connect the former religious centre with the village’s collapse.
Church rewards
The Sacred Tear can be used at a Site of Grace to improve the potency of the Crimson and Cerulean Flasks. It does not improve the Flask of Wondrous Physick.
Fixed rewards
The Flame Crest Wooden Shield is the primary village treasure. The Flame of Frenzy and the Sacred Tear are in the church, not inside the settlement’s central buildings. Lightning Strike is nearby but should not be described as a village-house reward.
Fixed rewards
| Item | Location | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Flame Crest Wooden Shield | Corpse inside an eastern village house | Fixed |
| The Flame of Frenzy | Corpse inside Callu Baptismal Church | Fixed |
| Sacred Tear | At the base of the church statue | Fixed |
| Golden Rune [2] | Corpse near the outer campsite and approach | Fixed, according to route guides |
| Lightning Strike | Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab in the nearby south-western ravine | Fixed enemy reward, outside the core village |
Crafting materials
The wider village and approach can contain gathering nodes and ground materials. The area directory commonly includes:
These materials are ordinary field pickups and are not all concentrated inside the settlement. Eye of Yelough is particularly relevant to crafting items associated with Madness, while Yellow Ember and Arteria Leaf are found around the wider wooded approach.
Item directory
Adjacent ravine
Enemy drops such as Golden Runes, Glass Shards, Weathered Straight Swords and other common loot should not be confused with guaranteed environmental collectibles. The exact drop tables are separate from the named treasure directory.
Village and outskirts
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church
The village’s name suggests illness, but its condition is not presented as an ordinary disease. Its inhabitants have been driven into Frenzied behaviour, and the church nearby contains an incantation directly associated with the Flame of Frenzy. The environmental storytelling therefore links the ruined settlement, its church and the scattered Frenzy-related materials without providing a named survivor to explain what happened.
The church’s presence is significant. It appears to have served the settlement before the villagers became hostile, but the game does not explicitly identify the congregation, the moment of the village’s corruption or the precise person who introduced Frenzy. Any stronger explanation should be treated as interpretation rather than confirmed history.
The area also works as a thematic counterpart to the later Frenzied Flame Village in Liurnia. Both settlements contain people overcome by Frenzy, but they are separate locations with different geographical settings and story functions. Ailing Village is a compact early-game ruin and loot stop; the Liurnian village is tied more directly to the Frenzied Flame route and Vyke.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Activate Ailing Village Outskirts. This is the most important practical step. It creates a short recovery route and lets you explore the village without repeatedly travelling from Castle Morne Rampart.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Search the outer approach. Check the campsite and surrounding cliff paths for the Golden Rune [2] and gathering materials. Expect rats and other Frenzied enemies.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Enter the village carefully. Approach from the edge rather than moving directly into the central fire. Pull one or two Frenzied Commoners away from the group.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Clear the central area. Once the outer enemies are dead, deal with the commoners around the pyre. Keep space behind you so that a retreat does not lead into another group.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Search the eastern house. Loot the corpse inside to obtain the Flame Crest Wooden Shield.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Move south to Callu Baptismal Church. The church sits below the village. Check the entrance and interior before looting, as rats can attack while the player is standing beside the reward corpses.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Collect The Flame of Frenzy. Take the incantation from the corpse inside the church.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Collect the Sacred Tear. Search at the foot of the statue.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Optional: take Lightning Strike. Travel into the nearby south-western ravine and locate the Teardrop Scarab. Defeating it awards the Lightning Strike incantation, but this is an adjacent encounter rather than a reward inside Ailing Village itself.
Ailing Village and Callu Baptismal Church: steps
- 01Return to the grace or continue towards Castle Morne. There is no boss or NPC quest to complete here, so the area is finished once the fixed items have been collected.
NPCs
There are no confirmed named NPCs resident in Ailing Village, Ailing Village Outskirts or Callu Baptismal Church.
Factions
No formal faction has a visible headquarters or active quest presence here. The inhabitants are ordinary villagers corrupted by Frenzy rather than members of a clearly identified military or religious organisation.
Shops and services
There are no shops, merchants, smithing facilities, summoning pools, purchasable properties or other permanent services in the area. Ailing Village Outskirts is a Site of Grace and therefore provides standard grace functions, but it is not a settlement service hub.
The area has no known quest-state transformation comparable to a major NPC hub. Its principal rewards are available as ordinary exploration pickups from the start of the game once the player can reach the Weeping Peninsula.
No source reviewed for this guide establishes a base-game progression trigger that removes these rewards permanently. As with all open-world item collection, the player should still collect them before advancing if they want a clean early-game inventory.
Is Ailing Village part of Limgrave or the Weeping Peninsula?
It is in Limgrave, within the Weeping Peninsula sub-region. Guides and regional maps commonly list Ailing Village and Ailing Village Outskirts under the Weeping Peninsula.
Is there a boss in Ailing Village?
No. The area contains Frenzied Commoners and rats but no named boss encounter.
Where is the Flame Crest Wooden Shield?
It is inside a house on the eastern side of Ailing Village, on a corpse.
Where is The Flame of Frenzy?
It is inside Callu Baptismal Church, south of the village, on a corpse.
Where is the Sacred Tear?
It is at the base of the statue inside Callu Baptismal Church.
Is Ailing Village the same as Frenzied Flame Village?
No. Ailing Village is in the Weeping Peninsula. Frenzied Flame Village is in Liurnia and is a separate location associated with the Frenzied Flame and Vyke.
Is Ailing Village in the DLC?
The base-game Ailing Village is not DLC content. Shadow of the Erdtree contains a different place called Abandoned Ailing Village, which must be kept separate.
