East Liurnia of the Lakes

East Liurnia of the Lakes is a practical guide label for the eastern half of Liurnia, covering the lake’s eastern shore, the road towards the Grand Lift of Dectus, the Carian Study Hall and several smaller settlements and dungeons.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • Get the East Liurnia map fragment first It stands beside the road in Laskyar Ruins and reveals the southern and eastern roads, but not every vertical plateau or underground route.
  • The eastern roads are a northbound progression route They lead from the lake shore towards Bellum Church, the Grand Lift of Dectus and the northern Liurnia ravine.
  • The eastern plateau is reached indirectly The Church of Inhibition and Frenzied Flame Village are not reached simply by climbing from the lake. Approach through the Bellum Highway and the cliff paths, or use the tombstone platforms near the elevated edges.
  • Several questlines overlap here Hyetta, White-Faced Varre, Rya, D and Fia-related clues, and the Church of Vows’ absolution service can all affect how you explore the region.
  • The area contains major optional rewards These include the Black Knifeprint, Deathroot, the Carian Study Hall route to the Divine Tower, sacred tears, a crystal-tunnel bell bearing and several unique spells.
  • Do not confuse East Liurnia with North Liurnia Raya Lucaria Academy, Academy Gate Town and the main academy bosses are treated here as neighbouring areas, even though routes into them begin from the eastern and central lake roads.

Note

Base game guide. This article uses East Liurnia of the Lakes as the practical subregion shown by the game’s eastern Liurnia map fragment and commonly used by Elden Ring guides. It is not a separate major region with a hard in-game boundary. The guide therefore includes the eastern shore, Liurnia Highway, Bellum Highway and the elevated eastern plateau, while treating Raya Lucaria, the central lake, western Liurnia and Caria Manor as neighbouring areas rather than silently folding them into East Liurnia.

Overview

East Liurnia is the broad eastern half of Liurnia of the Lakes, running from the flooded lowlands south of the Academy towards the Grand Lift of Dectus and the high ground around the Church of Inhibition. It is one of the game’s most useful transition areas: the roads connect Limgrave to northern Liurnia and Altus Plateau, while its cliffs conceal churches, catacombs, a divine tower, a crystal tunnel, an underground river entrance and several quest locations.

The region is easy to underestimate if treated as merely the area around Laskyar Ruins. That central lake route is only the lowland portion. East Liurnia also includes the eastern escarpment, the Liurnia Highway, Bellum Church, the Church of Inhibition, the Frenzied Flame Village, Black Knife Catacombs, the eastern Minor Erdtree, Carian Study Hall and the Divine Tower of Liurnia. Some guides also group the Grand Lift of Dectus and the northern ravine with East Liurnia, although the lift is the actual gateway to Altus Plateau rather than a conventional Liurnia landmark.

Recommended first circuit

Recommended first circuit: steps

  1. 01
From Lake-Facing Cliffs, descend into the water and travel east towards Laskyar Ruins.
  2. 02
Collect Map: Liurnia, East from the stone map stele.
  3. 03
Visit Laskyar Ruins and continue north-east to the lake shore Sites of Grace.
  4. 04
Turn east towards the Church of Vows if you need absolution, a Sacred Tear or the Golden Sewing Needle and Golden Tailoring Tools.
  5. 05
Follow the highway north towards Bellum Church.
  6. 06
From Bellum Church, decide whether to continue towards the Grand Lift or climb towards the eastern plateau.
  7. 07
Explore Black Knife Catacombs, the Minor Erdtree and Carian Study Hall separately rather than attempting them as one straight route.
  8. 08
Leave the Church of Inhibition until you are prepared for Madness and the invading Festering Fingerprint Vyke.

Lake and lowland

The East Liurnia map fragment is near the road in Laskyar Ruins. It is usually the first map fragment found after entering Liurnia from Stormveil or the cliffside bypass.

Ainsel River Well is a vertical entrance to the underground Ainsel River. It is a lift rather than a conventional dungeon entrance, and it provides an early way to reach part of the underground world. The well itself does not mean that every Ainsel River or Lake of Rot location belongs to East Liurnia.

Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is built into the cliff beneath the Academy’s eastern side. Its miners and crystallian enemies make strike damage, heavy weapons and attacks against exposed crystal useful. The dungeon is an important source of upgrade materials and ends with a Crystalian boss. Game8 identifies the cave as a Liurnia location beneath the Academy and lists its upgrade-material rewards and Crystalian encounter.

Cliffbottom Catacombs descend from the eastern lowlands into a trap-heavy catacomb. Expect imps, pressure traps and narrow passages. The dungeon’s Cemetery Shade boss is vulnerable to sustained pressure but can be difficult to track in the darkness.

Church of Vows is both a landmark and a service location. Miriel, Pastor of Vows, offers sorcery and incantation instruction, and the church contains the Celestial Dew absolution service. It also holds the Golden Sewing Needle and Golden Tailoring Tools, which unlock special tailoring options when used with the appropriate equipment. The church is particularly useful if you have accidentally attacked an NPC and need to restore peaceful relations.

Bellum Church stands on the northern part of East Liurnia, reached by following the slope through the northern ravine or by using exposed cliffside ledges near the Walking Mausoleum. It contains a Sacred Tear and is associated with Hyetta’s quest. A Nomadic Merchant is found below the church.

The Grand Lift of Dectus is the eastern road’s main destination, but it is also the boundary between Liurnia and Altus Plateau. Using it normally requires both halves of the Dectus Medallion. The left half is found in Fort Haight in Limgrave and the right half in Fort Faroth in Caelid. The lift can also be bypassed through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, which is a neighbouring northern Liurnia route rather than part of the core East Liurnia lowlands.

Frenzied Flame Village is occupied by frenzied inhabitants and is watched by the nearby Frenzy-Flaming Tower. The tower applies Madness from a distance when its line of sight is active. Breaking line of sight with terrain, buildings and the village’s structures is essential. The village contains lore and equipment associated with the Frenzied Flame, including Shabriri’s Woe and a Frenzied’s Cookbook.

Church of Inhibition is a ruined church on the high eastern plateau. It contains a Sacred Tear and a key item associated with Hyetta’s quest. Festering Fingerprint Vyke invades near the church, making this one of the region’s most dangerous outdoor encounters. The church is also used in White-Faced Varre’s quest as a source of maiden’s blood if the player chooses the local solution instead of invading other players.

Carian Study Hall is an optional tower on the eastern cliffs. Its initial layout contains a progression route and a major hidden function. Giving Ranni’s Carian Inverted Statue to the pedestal changes the Study Hall into its inverted form and opens the route towards the Divine Tower of Liurnia. The tower contains the Cursemark of Death, but the item cannot be obtained immediately at the start of the game. It depends on progression through Ranni’s questline.

Black Knife Catacombs are among the region’s most important optional dungeons. They contain two distinct boss encounters and a concealed route. The main route leads to the Cemetery Shade, while a hidden area reaches the Black Knife Assassin. Rewards include the Black Knifeprint and Deathroot. The dungeon is tied to Fia’s investigation into the Night of the Black Knives and to the questline that begins from the Roundtable Hold. Game8 lists both boss encounters and the Black Knifeprint and Deathroot rewards.

Residents and service characters

Miriel is the most important permanent resident in East Liurnia. He provides a safe location for turning in spell scrolls and prayerbooks, and the Church of Vows offers absolution through Celestial Dew. His dialogue also provides background on the relationship between the Golden Order and the Carian royal family.

Hyetta’s location changes according to quest progression. If her earlier steps have been completed, she can reach Bellum Church and ask for a Shabriri Grape. Her dialogue then points towards the Church of Inhibition and the later Frenzied Flame sequence. Quest stages can be missed or displaced by advancing too far without speaking to her, so check her current location before clearing major story milestones.

Visitors and story-associated characters

Not all of these characters stand in East Liurnia at the same time. They are included because the region’s locations form part of their quest routes.

Varre’s quest can use the dead Finger Maiden at the Church of Inhibition for the required blood-soaked cloth step. This avoids the need to invade another player, although the quest also has an invasion-based route.

Fia and D are connected to the Black Knifeprint investigation. The Black Knife Catacombs are not simply an optional combat cave: their reward provides a clue that feeds into a wider narrative about the Night of the Black Knives.

Ranni’s quest eventually requires the Carian Inverted Statue for Carian Study Hall. The statue is obtained from Ranni after beginning her quest at Ranni’s Rise, which is in West Liurnia, not East Liurnia. Do not expect to activate the Study Hall’s major route on a first visit.

Game8’s regional boss breakdown places Festering Fingerprint Vyke at the Church of Inhibition, the Erdtree Avatar at the eastern Minor Erdtree and Adan, Thief of Fire, at Malefactor’s Evergaol under East Liurnia. Its list also places Magma Wyrm Makar in the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, which is better treated as the northern ravine route rather than the central East Liurnia lowland.

Practical boss advice

Erdtree Avatar

The Minor Erdtree’s Avatar is vulnerable to mounted hit-and-run tactics. Circle the tree, attack after its slow swings and avoid staying directly in front of its area-of-effect attacks. Holy resistance is useful, but the fight is generally more manageable on Torrent than on foot.

Festering Fingerprint Vyke

Vyke’s greatest danger is Madness. Keep distance during his charge, punish the recovery after his jumping attack and avoid trading blows while your Madness bar is high. If you are completing Hyetta’s quest, deal with Vyke before treating the Church of Inhibition as cleared.

Black Knife Assassin

The Assassin is found through the catacombs’ hidden route rather than the obvious boss door. Sound and visual clues help identify the concealed path. The reward is more important than the rune payout because the Black Knifeprint supports a major investigation.

Crystalian

Use strike damage, jump attacks and charged heavies to break the Crystalian’s stance. Once its crystal shell is damaged, ordinary attacks become substantially more effective. The Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel encounter is particularly punishing for light slash-only builds.

---

Fixed important items

The Cursemark of Death is progression-dependent. Reaching the Divine Tower is not enough by itself: the Carian Study Hall must first be inverted using the Carian Inverted Statue. The item’s importance is tied to Ranni, Fia and the wider story of Godwyn.

The Black Knifeprint is easily missed because the main catacomb route does not automatically lead to the Black Knife Assassin. Search for the concealed route after exploring the guillotine and blade-trap sections.

Collectible checklist

This checklist covers the principal fixed rewards and quest-related pickups, not every mushroom, crafting plant, weapon upgrade stone or random enemy drop.

Church of Vows

Services

The Church of Vows is not merely decorative. It is one of the most useful non-combat facilities in Liurnia, particularly for players experimenting with sorcery, incantations or altered armour.

Bellum Church merchants

The Nomadic Merchant below Bellum Church sells a regionally useful selection of consumables and travel supplies. Merchant inventories should be checked directly because the name “Nomadic Merchant” does not imply identical stock at every site.

Northern ravine merchant

A separate merchant appears along the northern route near the ravine leading towards the Grand Lift and Ruin-Strewn Precipice. This is a separate shop from the Bellum Church merchant. Do not collapse the two into one directory entry.

Named Sites of Grace commonly associated with East Liurnia include:

The exact division between eastern and northern Liurnia varies by guide, especially around Academy Gate Town, Ruin-Strewn Precipice and the Grand Lift. This article keeps the eastern highway and lift approaches together because they form a coherent travel route, but it does not treat Altus Plateau itself as Liurnia.

Early visit

At this point, avoid assuming that every visible eastern landmark is immediately accessible. The high churches and towers require a route around the cliffs.

Early visit: steps

  1. 01
Leave Stormveil Castle through the Lake-Facing Cliffs route, or use the eastern bypass if you skipped the castle.
  2. 02
Rest at Lake-Facing Cliffs and activate Torrent if you have not already done so.
  3. 03
Ride into the lake and find Laskyar Ruins.
  4. 04
Take the East Liurnia map fragment.
  5. 05
Explore the ruins, then use the Liurnia Lake Shore as your base.

Mid-game eastern route

  1. 01
    Visit the Church of Vows.
  2. 02
Speak with Miriel and collect the church’s fixed items.
  3. 03
Continue north along the Liurnia Highway.
  4. 04
Reach Bellum Church and activate its Site of Grace.
  5. 05
Speak to Hyetta if her quest has reached this stage.
  6. 06
Continue towards the Grand Lift of Dectus, or turn towards Black Knife Catacombs and the Minor Erdtree.
  7. 07
Explore the Frenzied Flame Village only when you are ready to manage Madness.
  8. 08
Finish at the Church of Inhibition and deal with Vyke.

Ranni and Fia-related route

The Study Hall and Black Knife Catacombs are related thematically but are not one dungeon or one linear quest. Each can be completed independently once its requirements are met.

---

Ranni and Fia-related route: steps

  1. 01
Start Ranni’s quest in West Liurnia.
  2. 02
    Obtain the Carian Inverted Statue.
  3. 03
    Return to Carian Study Hall.
  4. 04
Place the statue on the pedestal.
  5. 05
    Traverse the inverted Study Hall.
  6. 06
Reach the Divine Tower of Liurnia.
  7. 07
    Collect the Cursemark of Death.
  8. 08
Explore Black Knife Catacombs for the Black Knifeprint and Deathroot.
  9. 09
Return to the relevant quest characters and continue their separate questlines.

Madness

The Frenzied Flame Village, Frenzy-Flaming Tower and Church of Inhibition form the region’s Madness cluster. The tower is the immediate danger. Its effect can build while the player is in sight, even without a conventional enemy attacking. Use solid cover and move between buildings rather than attempting to sprint in a straight line.

The Church of Inhibition’s invading Vyke adds a second Madness threat. Equip resistance where possible, keep the fight mobile and avoid allowing the invasion to pin you against the church walls.

Hidden catacomb route

Black Knife Catacombs deliberately separates its obvious boss route from its most story-significant reward. Explore the moving blade traps and raised platforms carefully. A concealed path leads to the Black Knife Assassin and the Black Knifeprint.

Vertical access

The eastern cliffs contain several apparent dead ends. Look for:

Do not use the map’s apparent straight-line distance as proof that two landmarks are connected.

---

East Liurnia shows the overlap of several powers:

The Church of Vows is especially significant because its setting presents a reconciliation between traditions that are otherwise politically and religiously opposed. Carian Study Hall, meanwhile, turns Liurnia’s familiar observatory architecture into a literal puzzle of inversion and perspective.

---

Is the Grand Lift of Dectus part of East Liurnia?

It is commonly grouped with the northern end of East Liurnia because the Bellum Highway leads directly to it. Functionally, however, the lift is a transition facility to Altus Plateau. The plateau beyond the lift is not Liurnia.

Is Raya Lucaria Academy in East Liurnia?

No. It is in the northern or central Liurnia grouping. East Liurnia contains routes towards the Academy, including the lake shore and Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel, but not the Academy’s main dungeon directory.

Can I reach the Church of Inhibition early?

Yes, but the route is hazardous. The Frenzy-Flaming Tower can inflict Madness from range, and Festering Fingerprint Vyke may invade near the church. The location is accessible before completing the Academy, but that does not make it a low-level area.

Do I need Ranni’s quest for Carian Study Hall?

You can enter the Study Hall without completing the whole questline, but the inverted section and the Divine Tower route require the Carian Inverted Statue obtained during Ranni’s quest.

What should I prioritise if I only want the important rewards?

Collect the East Liurnia map fragment, visit Church of Vows, clear Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel for its upgrade progression, search Black Knife Catacombs for the Black Knifeprint and Deathroot, then return for Carian Study Hall after obtaining the Carian Inverted Statue.

What is easiest to miss?

The hidden Black Knife Catacombs route, Hyetta’s later Bellum Church dialogue, Varre’s Church of Inhibition alternative, the Frenzied Flame Village items and the progression-gated Divine Tower route are the most commonly overlooked pieces.
