Realm of Shadow

The Realm of Shadow is the large expansion region introduced in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The Realm of Shadow has four principal regions Gravesite Plain, Land of the Tower, Scadu Altus and Shadow Keep.
  • Its boundaries are broader than the central plain Cerulean Coast, Jagged Peak, Charo’s Hidden Grave, the Abyssal Woods, Rauh Base and Scaduview are all part of the wider Realm of Shadow.
  • Access requires two base-game victories Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood. After Mohg dies, touching Miquella’s cocoon transports the player into the DLC.
  • Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes are the region’s progression systems. They improve the player and Spirit Ashes while in the Realm of Shadow, but their effects do not apply in the Lands Between.
  • The main road is not the whole progression route Reaching distant areas often requires dropping through ravines, finding illusory or concealed passages, using spirit springs, or approaching from a different elevation.
  • The region is story-sensitive Miquella’s followers change position and allegiance, and advancing certain major events can alter NPC summon signs, dialogue and quest outcomes.

About this guide

Scope: This guide covers the Realm of Shadow, also called the Land of Shadow, as it appears in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It treats the Realm of Shadow as the complete DLC world rather than using the name for only the Gravesite Plain or the area around the Scadutree. Spoilers: Major story, NPC quest, area and boss spoilers follow.

Overview

The Realm of Shadow is the separate world explored in Shadow of the Erdtree. It is not a small annex to the Lands Between, nor merely the region surrounding the Shadow Keep. The Realm of Shadow contains four broad map regions, several major subregions, eight legacy or major dungeons, hidden routes that bypass the obvious roads, and a substantial vertical layer of underground, elevated and partially concealed areas. The principal regions are Gravesite Plain, Land of the Tower, Scadu Altus and Shadow Keep.

In the story, this is a land hidden beneath or within the shadow of the Erdtree. It is associated with the earliest history of Marika, the Hornsent, the Crucible and the violent purge carried out by Messmer. Miquella travelled there after abandoning his flesh, strength, lineage and golden associations, while his followers pursued him through the region.

The Realm of Shadow is designed around discovery rather than a single obvious route. A player who follows the main road can reach Castle Ensis and the Shadow Keep quickly, but that route misses the southern coast, the Jagged Peak, the Abyssal Woods, the Ancient Ruins of Rauh, much of Scadu Altus and the side entrances into several dungeons.

Regional directory

Gravesite Plain

The southern and central starting region. It contains open grassland, ruined settlements, the first Miquella follower encounters and the routes towards Castle Ensis, the southern coast and the eastern mountains.

Land of the Tower

The north-western and western highland region. It contains Rauh’s ruins and the late-game ascent towards Enir-Ilim.

Scadu Altus

The north-eastern and eastern region beyond Castle Ensis. It contains the Cathedral of Manus Metyr, Bonny Village, the Hinterland route, the Abyssal Woods and Midra’s Manse.

Shadow Keep

The central fortress and its attached districts. The keep is large enough to function as a region in its own right, with exterior courtyards, a flooded Church District, the Specimen Storehouse and routes to Scaduview.

This hierarchy is important because names such as Rauh Base, Scaduview and Abyssal Woods are not simply points of interest on the Gravesite Plain. They are distinct map areas with their own enemies, routes, landmarks and progression implications.

Entering the Realm of Shadow

The DLC cannot be entered from an ordinary map edge. The player must first defeat:

After Mohg’s defeat, interact with the arm hanging from Miquella’s cocoon to travel to the Realm of Shadow. Bandai Namco’s official access guide confirms that defeating both bosses is required.

Radahn’s festival can be activated through parts of Ranni and Blaidd’s questlines, through Jerren and Iji after beginning Ranni’s quest, or by reaching Altus Plateau and resting at a Site of Grace. Mohg can be reached through White Mask Varré’s questline or the Sending Gate in the Consecrated Snowfield.

Once the player has rested at a Site of Grace in the Realm of Shadow, fast travel between the DLC and the Lands Between becomes available. If the player dies before touching a Site of Grace, the cocoon at Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum remains the re-entry point.

Entering the Realm of Shadow: steps

  1. 01
    Starscourge Radahn in Caelid.
  2. 02
Mohg, Lord of Blood in Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum.

Recommended broad route

This is not a mandatory order. The Realm of Shadow deliberately supports alternative routes. For example, the southern coast can be reached without first defeating the main Gravesite Plain progression boss, and the Abyssal Woods is accessed through an obscure route rather than the most prominent northern road.

---

A sensible first exploration route is

  1. 01
Enter at the Cocoon of the Empyrean.
  2. 02
Follow the Gravesite Plain towards the Three-Path Cross and Main Gate Cross.
  3. 03
Explore the western side and enter Belurat, Tower Settlement.
  4. 04
Continue through Castle Ensis when ready to enter Scadu Altus.
  5. 05
Explore Scadu Altus before committing to the Shadow Keep.
  6. 06
Return south for Cerulean Coast, Charo’s Hidden Grave, Stone Coffin Fissure and Jagged Peak.
  7. 07
Investigate Bonny Village, the Cathedral of Manus Metyr and the roads towards the Abyssal Woods.
  8. 08
Enter Shadow Keep from the main approach, the Church District or the eastern water route.
  9. 09
Explore Rauh Base and the Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
  10. 10
Treat Enir-Ilim as the final major story region.

Gravesite Plain

Gravesite Plain is the introductory region, but it is not a tutorial zone. Its open fields contain large enemy patrols, wandering furnace golems, demi-human settlements, ghostflame-related ruins and several early Scadutree Fragment and Revered Spirit Ash locations.

The Three-Path Cross and Main Gate Cross are early meeting points for Miquella’s followers. These sites are especially important for dialogue and quest progression. The official DLC material identifies Hornsent as one of the followers encountered in the early region.

The plain also acts as a junction. The western road leads towards Belurat and the coast, the northern route leads towards Castle Ensis, while the eastern and south-eastern routes eventually connect with the mountains and the approach to the Jagged Peak.

The Suppression Pillar is one of the region’s most significant lore landmarks. Its description presents the Realm of Shadow as a place where forms of death converge and are suppressed, linking the geography to the DLC’s repeated association with corpses, abandoned remains and discarded histories.

Important named places include

Belurat, Tower Settlement

Belurat is a large, vertically arranged legacy dungeon built around a tower settlement. It contains rooftops, stairways, drainage passages, courtyards, sealed rooms and a final approach through the settlement’s upper defences.

The area’s architecture reflects the Hornsent civilisation and its relationship with the Crucible. It is not simply a ruined castle. The settlement combines civic, religious and defensive spaces, and its progression loops back through shortcuts rather than following one straight corridor.

Key encounters include the Divine Beast Dancing Lion. The dungeon also contains Miquella-related items, Hornsent equipment, Scadutree progression resources and paths leading towards the Hornsent’s story.

The Hornsent Grandam is found in Belurat and is associated with the Divine Beast and the Hornsent’s memory of the purge. Her dialogue and quest-related interactions are easy to miss if the player rushes directly to the dungeon boss.

Named entries

Castle Ensis

Castle Ensis is the main bridge from Gravesite Plain to Scadu Altus. It is a fortified crossing rather than a sprawling settlement, with a long approach, walls, interior chambers and a final boss arena.

The castle is associated with Rellana, Twin Moon Knight. Defeating her opens the ordinary route into Scadu Altus, although parts of Scadu Altus can be reached through alternative paths.

The castle’s practical importance is greater than its size suggests. It is the first major test of whether the player has begun using Scadutree Fragments, and it establishes the DLC’s expectation that damage scaling is different from ordinary character levelling.

Cerulean Coast and Charo’s Hidden Grave

The Cerulean Coast occupies the southern shore. Its blue flowers, open shoreline and enormous stone coffins make it visually distinct from the central plain. It is reached by following the Ellac River southwards and then opening out into the coastal area.

The coast contains the route to Stone Coffin Fissure, the Cerulean Coast Cross and the approach to Charo’s Hidden Grave. The grave is a raised, red-flower-covered area reached from the coast through a giant stone coffin route. It contains the Lamenter’s Gaol and the path towards the Death Rite Bird encounter.

The coast is an excellent early detour because it offers exploration, a different visual language and access to several unique items without requiring completion of the main northern route.

Named directory

Jagged Peak

The Jagged Peak is the mountainous south-eastern section. Its route is narrow, steep and dominated by dragons, lightning and vertical ascent. The zone is closely tied to the Dragon Communion tradition and the story of Igon, Drake Warrior Ancient Dragon-Man and Bayle the Dread.

The route is not intended to be cleared in one uninterrupted climb. Sites of Grace and side ledges allow the player to recover, while dragon encounters can often be bypassed or approached from more favourable terrain.

The central objective is reaching Bayle’s arena. The Grand Altar of Dragon Communion is an important service location, allowing the player to exchange Dragon Hearts for dragon incantations associated with the DLC.

The broad area is divided into

Scadu Altus

Scadu Altus is the broad northern region beyond Castle Ensis. It contains fields, ravines, villages, churches, fortified ruins and the route to the Shadow Keep.

The region is less visually uniform than Gravesite Plain. Its western side contains the Moorth Ruins and Bonny Village, while the northern and eastern sides lead towards the Cathedral of Manus Metyr, the Hinterland and the Abyssal Woods.

The Bonny Village route is particularly important because it demonstrates the DLC’s environmental storytelling. The player must use concealed paths and narrow crossings rather than simply following a marked main road. Bonny Village also connects to the Bonny Gaol, the eastward road and the route towards Manus Metyr.

The Cathedral of Manus Metyr is the centre of Count Ymir’s questline. It is both a landmark and a functional quest location, with a throne, underground finger-related areas and progression that changes after major interactions.

Named directory

Abyssal Woods

The Abyssal Woods is an optional, hostile eastern region reached through a concealed route involving the Shadow Keep and the Darklight Catacombs. It is separated from the normal open-world flow by a deliberately oppressive change in atmosphere and enemy behaviour.

The area’s signature enemies are the Aging Untouchables. Their presentation is designed to discourage ordinary combat, and the player must learn when they can be damaged and when evasion is preferable. Torrent cannot be used throughout the main woods, which makes navigation and retreat more deliberate.

Midra’s Manse is the legacy dungeon at the heart of the area. It culminates in the Lord of Frenzied Flame-related encounter with Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame.

The woods contain

Shadow Keep

Shadow Keep is the central military and administrative complex of the Realm of Shadow. Its full scope includes the outer fortress, storehouse, church district, flooded lower areas and routes towards Scaduview.

Shadow Keep supports several different routes and should not be treated as a single linear dungeon. The main gate leads towards the golden hippopotamus and the storehouse. The Church District is reached through the flooded eastern side and requires careful platforming across rooftops and submerged structures. The back route leads towards Commander Gaius and the Scaduview area.

The Specimen Storehouse contains preserved creatures and displays that reveal how the keep’s forces classify and study beings of the Realm of Shadow. Its upper levels provide some of the DLC’s strongest environmental storytelling and eventually lead to Messmer’s chamber.

The Church District is initially flooded. Solving its water-level problem opens a separate line through the keep and provides access to additional items and encounters.

Ancient Ruins of Rauh and Rauh Base

The Rauh region lies to the north-west and is split into a lower approach and extensive upper ruins.

Rauh Base is reached through a cave and serves as the lower entrance. The Ancient Ruins of Rauh then spread across bridges, collapsed temples, waterfalls and elevated walkways. The layout is intentionally confusing because the upper ruins are often visible long before the player discovers the route to them.

The Church of the Bud is the region’s major story destination and is associated with Romina, Saint of the Bud. The Scadutree Base provides one of the most direct approaches to the Scadutree itself and contains a major story encounter.

Ancient Ruins of Rauh and Rauh Base

Enir-Ilim

Enir-Ilim is the late-game sacred tower region. It becomes accessible after the relevant main story progression and serves as the final major area of the DLC.

Enir-Ilim combines tower interiors, open terraces, spiral stairs and large ceremonial spaces. It is the culmination of the Miquella and Messmer narrative threads and contains the DLC’s final major boss sequence.

Named entries include

Miquella’s followers

Miquella’s followers are not a single local population. They include travellers from different parts of the Lands Between and residents or descendants associated with the Realm of Shadow. Their shared purpose is to follow Miquella, but their motivations diverge as the story advances.

The followers’ signs, locations and available dialogue can change after major story events. For that reason, speak to them at every discovered cross and Site of Grace before entering the Shadow Keep or advancing the main story.

Named followers and associated characters include

Local populations and factions

The Hornsent

The Hornsent are the principal historical culture of the Realm of Shadow. Their identity is tied to the Crucible, spirals, horns, beastly aspects and ritual architecture. The Hornsent were targeted during Messmer’s purge, leaving their settlements and monuments as a mixture of ruins, occupied spaces and haunted memory.

Messmer’s forces

Messmer’s soldiers occupy fortifications, roads and the Shadow Keep. Their presence includes regular soldiers, knights, fire-based enemies, black knights, inquisitors and various creatures used or studied by the keep.

The Scadutree and its followers

The Scadutree is not merely a background landmark. It defines the DLC’s geography and progression imagery. The Realm of Shadow is described as a place obscured by the Erdtree, while the Scadutree functions as its dark counterpart or shadow.

Frenzied Flame-associated inhabitants

The Abyssal Woods and Midra’s Manse are associated with Frenzied Flame imagery and a different kind of threat from Messmer’s military forces. These areas should be treated as a separate narrative pocket rather than an ordinary branch of the Scadu Altus road.

Sites of Grace

Sites of Grace are the primary checkpoints. They also enable:

Important early Sites of Grace include

Map fragments

The Realm of Shadow map is initially obscured. Map fragments reveal the large-scale terrain but do not explain its vertical routes. The five major map pieces are associated with:

A revealed map is useful for orientation, but it does not replace visual exploration. Several routes to the same apparent destination are separated by elevation or underground passages.

Map fragments

Scadutree Fragments

Scadutree Fragments improve the player’s attack power and damage negation through the Scadutree Blessing. The blessing is applied at a Site of Grace and works only in the Realm of Shadow.

Collect fragments before attempting a major boss if ordinary levelling has stopped producing meaningful survivability.

Revered Spirit Ashes

Revered Spirit Ashes improve the offensive and defensive performance of Spirit Ashes and Torrent in the Realm of Shadow. They are spent through the same Site of Grace blessing menu.

They are particularly useful for players who rely on summons, because DLC enemies are tuned to punish unupgraded Spirit Ashes even when the player’s character level is high.

Shops and non-shop services

The Realm of Shadow has few conventional shops. Most services are provided by NPCs or fixed locations rather than functioning town merchants.

Do not treat decorative stalls, ruined buildings or named villages as shops unless a merchant or purchase interface is actually present.

The principal named boss directory includes

Optional and regional bosses

The list above is a directory of named or significant encounters, not a claim that every ordinary enemy variant is represented. The Realm of Shadow also contains numerous new enemy families, including Messmer soldiers, Horned Warriors, Furnace Golems, Curseblades, Gravebirds, Aging Untouchables, Divine Beast Warriors and various spirit-infused creatures.

---

The main story follows Miquella’s trail and eventually leads through the Shadow Keep, Rauh and Enir-Ilim. Optional activities provide much of the Realm of Shadow’s strongest content.

Late-game checklist

---

The Realm of Shadow’s main danger is not only enemy damage. Its routes are designed to make the player misread the landscape.

---

The Realm of Shadow is presented as a hidden historical layer beneath the familiar mythology of the Lands Between. Official promotional material describes it as the place where Marika first set foot, a land purged in an unremembered battle and burned by Messmer’s flame. It also presents Miquella as having departed there after casting aside his flesh, strength, lineage and golden identity.

The Hornsent’s culture is built around the Crucible and the sacred significance of horns, animal traits and spiralling growth. Their ruins preserve a society that existed before the Golden Order’s dominance. Messmer’s crusade transformed that society into a landscape of ruined settlements, occupied fortifications and inherited grievance.

The Scadutree reflects the DLC’s central contrast between visible history and suppressed history. The golden Erdtree represents the order established by Marika, while the shadowed land contains the violence, discarded peoples and excluded traditions that helped create that order. This is why the Realm of Shadow is not merely a new map. It is a hidden continuation of the base game’s historical argument.

The region’s many forms of death reinforce the same theme. Corpses are preserved, impaled, burned, buried, transformed into weapons or left to decay in forbidden places. The Suppressing Pillar, the stone coffins, the Finger Ruins, the Abyssal Woods and the Shadow Keep’s specimens all present different ways of containing or exploiting what the dominant order cannot accept.

---

This guide’s regional hierarchy is based primarily on the Eldenpedia region entry, which identifies the four major regions and their principal subareas and dungeons. The access requirements, blessing systems and cross-realm travel rules are supported by Bandai Namco’s official access guide. The DLC’s official story framing and its descriptions of Marika, Miquella and Messmer are taken from Bandai Namco’s promotional and story material.

Research status: draft for encyclopaedic expansion. The principal regional boundaries, major subareas, dungeons, characters and services have been consolidated here, but an independently verified, item-by-item directory of every decorative storefront, minor background landmark, individual collectible placement, enemy variant and missability trigger would require a full interactive-map and quest-state audit. The guide therefore does not claim exhaustive completeness for those categories.
