Key takeaways
- Do not treat West Limgrave as only the area around Gatefront Its scope includes the western coast, Lake Agheel, the southern and central caves, the Stranded Graveyard and routes approaching Stormhill.
- Get the West Limgrave map fragment at Gatefront Ruins, then use the map to identify roads, caves and the lake’s shoreline.
- Visit Church of Elleh early Merchant Kalé sells the Crafting Kit and other useful starting equipment.
- The Tree Sentinel is an optional gatekeeper, not a required first fight You can ride around him and return later.
- Lake Agheel is not safe merely because it is open ground Flying Dragon Agheel, several enemy groups and night-time encounters make the lake a dangerous central landmark.
- Several early questlines begin here but continue elsewhere, including those of Ranni, Blaidd, Alexander, Yura, Sellen, Roderika, Kenneth Haight and D.
About this guide
Scope: Base-game Elden Ring. This guide uses West Limgrave as the western portion of Limgrave shown by the Map: Limgrave, West fragment, including the western plains, Lake Agheel’s western and central shores, the coast, Gatefront, the southern approach to Stormhill and the Stranded Graveyard. Stormhill and Stormveil Castle are listed separately where their own subregion classification matters. East Limgrave, Mistwood’s eastern reaches, Caelid, Liurnia and the Weeping Peninsula are not treated as part of West Limgrave except where a route or quest crosses the boundary.
Overview
West Limgrave is Elden Ring’s first substantial open-world region and the area that teaches most of the game’s fundamental habits: read the landscape, follow roads only when useful, search ruined buildings for vertical entrances, return to suspicious landmarks at night and do not assume that a large enemy is intended to be fought immediately.
The western half of Limgrave contains the opening field around The First Step, the Church of Elleh, Gatefront Ruins, Lake Agheel, the western beaches, several early caves and catacombs, and the road into Stormhill. It also contains the game’s first major concentration of merchants, quest NPCs, field bosses and upgrade materials. Limgrave as a whole is bordered by Liurnia to the north-west, Caelid to the north-east and the Weeping Peninsula to the south. Stormveil Castle dominates the northern skyline and is the region’s legacy dungeon, although its surrounding Stormhill subregion is best considered separately from the open western plain.
Boundaries and hierarchy
Limgrave
Limgrave is the broad regional name. It includes the western and eastern mainland, Stormhill, the Stranded Graveyard and the Weeping Peninsula in the game’s wider location hierarchy. The region’s principal legacy dungeon is Stormveil Castle.
West Limgrave
West Limgrave is the map-defined western portion of the region. In practical terms, it covers:
The in-game map fragment is labelled Map: Limgrave, West, but the game does not present a formal on-screen boundary line. This guide therefore follows the map’s western division and the established subregion labels rather than pretending that every cliff or road has a perfectly explicit boundary.
Stranded Graveyard
The Stranded Graveyard is the underground opening area where the Tarnished awakens. It contains the Cave of Knowledge tutorial and the entrance to Fringefolk Hero’s Grave. It is treated as a separate Limgrave subregion in location lists.
Stormhill and Stormveil
Stormhill is the windy, elevated northern area below Stormveil Castle. Its named locations include Stormhill Shack, Warmaster’s Shack, Stormhill Evergaol, Saintsbridge, Deathtouched Catacombs and the Limgrave Tower Bridge. Stormveil Castle itself is a separate legacy dungeon, though it is physically and narratively tied to western Limgrave.
Places not included
West Limgrave is a low, open land of grassland, cliffs, shallow beaches and scattered ruins. Lake Agheel occupies much of the centre, while the western coast provides a quieter alternative route around the Tree Sentinel and Gatefront. The northern road rises into Stormhill, where the terrain becomes steeper, windier and more heavily watched by Godrick’s forces.
The region is deliberately arranged around visible landmarks. The golden tree near the Church of Elleh, the large lake, the Gatefront road and the silhouette of Stormveil all help establish direction before the player has a complete map.
Main routes
Torrent becomes available after meeting Melina at a Site of Grace after reaching the open world. Once mounted, many routes become safer to scout, and the Tree Sentinel can be bypassed rather than defeated.
The following directory groups the principal verified named places associated with West Limgrave and its immediate Stormhill connection. Some are entrances, visual landmarks or mission locations rather than full dungeons.
West Limgrave
Places not included: The following should be kept separate
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| East Limgrave | Mistwood, Fort Haight, Siofra River Well’s surface approach and the eastern side of the region. |
| Weeping Peninsula | everything south of the Bridge of Sacrifice, including Castle Morne. |
| Caelid | the scarlet eastern region beyond Limgrave. |
| Liurnia | the region beyond Stormveil’s northern exit. |
| Roundtable Hold | an isolated hub reached through fast travel, not a physical West Limgrave building. |
| Limveld | the altered, procedurally arranged setting of Elden Ring Nightreign, not West Limgrave in the base game. |
Main routes
- 01The western road: The First Step to Church of Elleh, then north-west to Gatefront Ruins.
- 02The Stormgate road: Through Gatefront and Stormgate into Stormhill and towards Margit.
- 03The lake route: From Agheel Lake South or North around the lake, with access to Dragon-Burnt Ruins, Waypoint Ruins and the Murkwater approaches.
- 04The coastal route: From the Church of Elleh or the southern cliffs down towards Coastal Cave and the western Nomadic Merchant.
- 05The southern route: Towards the Bridge of Sacrifice and the Weeping Peninsula. This is a neighbouring region, not West Limgrave proper.
- 06The eastern route: Towards Mistwood and Fort Haight. This is East Limgrave.
Stranded Graveyard and opening area
Western and central Limgrave
Stormhill and Stormveil approach
The broader Limgrave location directory also records Fort Haight, Mistwood Ruins, the Minor Erdtree, Weeping Peninsula churches and Castle Morne, but those belong to East Limgrave or the Weeping Peninsula and are excluded from this guide’s main scope.
Stormhill and Stormveil approach
Sites of Grace
Stormhill
The exact classification of a few Sites of Grace varies between guides because the game’s map labels and subregion boundaries overlap. The important practical distinction is whether a location lies on the western plain, in Stormhill or in a separate neighbouring region.
West Limgrave and opening area
Stormhill
Churches and flask upgrades
The Church of Elleh is the first safe service point. Merchant Kalé is here, and the site becomes especially useful after returning with Torrent.
The Third Church of Marika, east of the central road and closer to East Limgrave, contains a Sacred Tear and a flask-related item. It is best treated as a nearby connection rather than a core western location.
The Church of Dragon Communion lies on an island reached through Coastal Cave. It provides access to dragon incantation purchasing after obtaining Dragon Hearts. The island is separate from the mainland in practical terms, but the route begins in West Limgrave.
Residents and merchants
The wider Limgrave NPC list includes these characters alongside Anastasia, Tarnished-Eater, Recusant Henricus and Witch-Hunter Jerren. Those characters have Limgrave or Stormhill associations but are not all continuously resident in West Limgrave.
Residents and merchants
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Merchant Kalé | Church of Elleh. Sells the Crafting Kit, basic equipment and information. |
| Nomadic Merchant, Western Limgrave | Beneath a collapsed structure on the western coast, south-east of Coastal Cave. |
| Sorceress Sellen | Waypoint Ruins Cellar. A major sorcery teacher and an important figure in later quest progression. |
| Boc the Seamster | Initially hidden as a tree or bush near the road east of Agheel Lake. His quest later concerns clothing alteration. |
| White-Faced Varre | Near The First Step at the beginning of the game. His quest later moves to Liurnia and beyond. |
| Melina | Appears at suitable Sites of Grace after the opening exploration and offers the accord that unlocks levelling and Torrent. |
| Roderika | Stormhill Shack, technically in Stormhill rather than the low western plain. Her storyline leads to Spirit Tuning at Roundtable Hold. |
| Knight Bernahl | Warmaster’s Shack in Stormhill. He teaches Ashes of War and later becomes connected with Volcano Manor. |
| Bloody Finger Hunter Yura | Encountered around the Murkwater area and later connected with Bloody Finger Nerijus. |
| Alexander, Warrior Jar | Found in a hole near the road in the Stormhill direction. He must be struck or otherwise freed before his quest can continue. |
| D, Hunter of the Dead | Found near Summonwater Village. His story concerns Those Who Live in Death and later connects to Roundtable Hold. |
| Blaidd the Half-Wolf | His initial Limgrave presence is tied to the Mistwood, which is East Limgrave, but his early quest can lead the player back towards Forlorn Hound Evergaol. |
| Kenneth Haight | His principal location is Fort Haight in East Limgrave and should not be counted as a West Limgrave resident. |
Factions and forces
Godrick’s soldiers
Godrick’s infantry, knights, foot soldiers and mounted mercenaries occupy Gatefront, Stormgate, the roads and several ruins. Their camps are useful early sources of weapons, shields, crafting materials and runes, but the soldiers are positioned to punish careless frontal attacks.
Demi-Humans
Demi-Humans occupy Groveside Cave, Coastal Cave and other wooded or coastal sites. Their behaviour changes when the larger demi-human chiefs are alerted, so separating lesser enemies before engaging the chief is often safer.
Wandering nobles
Wandering nobles appear throughout the roads and ruins. They are weak individually, but their numbers, dogs and torch-bearing variants can surround an inexperienced player.
Nomadic merchants
The merchants are peaceful unless attacked. Their shops are fixed, not random, and their wares vary by location. The western merchant’s inventory includes boluses, Smithing Stone 1, an Armorer’s Cookbook, a Broadsword, Club, Shortbow, arrows, bolts and an Iron Roundshield.
Merchant Kalé
Location: Church of Elleh Function: Functional shop and early tutorial merchant.
Buy the Crafting Kit before travelling too far. Crafting is one of the most useful early systems for curing poison, preparing elemental ammunition and making consumables.
Important purchases include
Nomadic Merchant, Western Limgrave
Location: Western beach, south-east of Coastal Cave Function: Functional shop.
The merchant’s shop and location are separately documented, so the nearby ruined structure should not be mistaken for a purchasable property or functioning inn.

Cave of Knowledge
The tutorial dungeon teaches movement, attacks, guard counters, stealth, jumping and basic boss presentation. It is optional in the sense that the player can leave without completing it, but it is strongly recommended for a first playthrough.
Fringefolk Hero’s Grave
Access: Use two Stonesword Keys at the imp statue in the Stranded Graveyard.
This is an advanced opening dungeon rather than a normal early cave. It contains poison, narrow paths, an invulnerable chariot hazard and Grafted Scions. The main prize is Erdtree’s Favor, a talisman that raises maximum HP, stamina and equip load. A second talisman, Haligdrake Talisman, can be reached through the Stranded Graveyard area by an exterior route.
Groveside Cave
A short cave west of the Church of Elleh, occupied by demi-humans. It is a good first dungeon for learning how torchlight, corridors and group control work.
Stormfoot Catacombs
A small catacomb west of the Gatefront road. Its traps and imps reward careful use of sound, corners and ranged attacks. Catacomb bosses and loot vary in importance, but the dungeon is useful for obtaining early Spirit Ash-related resources and learning the dungeon pattern.
Coastal Cave
A beach cave occupied by demi-humans. Defeating its bosses opens the route to the Church of Dragon Communion. Old Knight Istvan can also appear as a co-operator for the boss encounter in this cave, while his separate Volcano Manor invasion belongs to a later progression state.
Limgrave Tunnels
A mine near Lake Agheel. Its miners are resistant to slashing attacks but vulnerable to strike damage, making a mace, club or other blunt weapon particularly useful. The tunnels provide early Smithing Stones and culminate in a Stonedigger Troll encounter.
Murkwater Cave and Murkwater Catacombs
These locations lie along the Murkwater route. Murkwater Cave is connected to the Patches encounter, while Murkwater Catacombs contain skeletal enemies and a watchdog-style boss encounter. Bloody Finger Nerijus can invade outside in the river area, particularly during the relevant early quest state.
Waypoint Ruins Cellar
The cellar beneath Waypoint Ruins contains Mad Pumpkin Head. After the boss is defeated, Sorceress Sellen can be found beyond the door. She is the key early vendor for sorceries and later becomes involved in a major questline.
Deathtouched Catacombs
A Stormhill catacomb associated with death and skeletons. It contains the Uchigatana and a Deathroot, making it especially valuable for dexterity or bleed-oriented characters and for D’s storyline.
Main and legacy-dungeon bosses
Stormveil is not merely another West Limgrave ruin. It is the region’s legacy dungeon and the first major progression test. Margit can be postponed, and the player can explore much of Limgrave and the Weeping Peninsula before returning.
Main and legacy-dungeon bosses
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Soldier of Godrick | Tutorial boss in the Cave of Knowledge. |
| Margit, the Fell Omen | Blocks Castleward Tunnel before Stormveil Castle. |
| Godrick the Grafted | Main demigod boss of Stormveil Castle. |
| Grafted Scion | Opening boss at the Chapel of Anticipation and a later enemy in Fringefolk Hero’s Grave. |
Field bosses and evergaol bosses
The Forlorn Hound Evergaol rewards the Bloodhound’s Fang, while Stormhill Evergaol rewards Aspects of the Crucible: Tail. Evergaol fights are normally solo encounters, with the special exception that Blaidd can be summoned for Darriwil’s fight after the relevant interaction.
Field bosses and evergaol bosses
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Tree Sentinel | On the road near The First Step. Optional. |
| Flying Dragon Agheel | Lake Agheel. Optional dragon field boss. |
| Mad Pumpkin Head | Waypoint Ruins Cellar. |
| Stonedigger Troll | Limgrave Tunnels. |
| Beastman of Farum Azula | Groveside Cave. |
| Demi-Human Chiefs | Coastal Cave. |
| Bloodhound Knight Darriwil | Forlorn Hound Evergaol. |
| Crucible Knight | Stormhill Evergaol. |
| Black Knife Assassin | Deathtouched Catacombs. |
| Tibia Mariner | Summonwater Village, outside the western core but important to the nearby route. |
| Night’s Cavalry | A night-time mounted encounter in Limgrave. |
| Deathbird | A night-time encounter whose exact appearance is tied to the relevant time and location state. |
| Bell Bearing Hunter | A night-time invasion at a merchant site under the correct progression conditions. |
Ordinary enemies
Enemy drops are not all guaranteed. Some equipment is fixed in chests or on corpses, while other weapons, armour and crafting materials are random drops from specific enemy types.
Ordinary enemies
Fixed early acquisitions
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Map | Limgrave, West: Gatefront Ruins map pillar. |
| Crafting Kit | Bought from Merchant Kalé. |
| Whetstone Knife | Gatefront Ruins underground chest. |
| Storm Stomp Ash of War | Gatefront Ruins underground chamber. |
| Uchigatana | Deathtouched Catacombs. |
| Erdtree’s Favor | Fringefolk Hero’s Grave. |
| Haligdrake Talisman | Stranded Graveyard exterior route. |
| Green Turtle Talisman | Summonwater Village, in an underground room. |
| Bloodhound’s Fang | Forlorn Hound Evergaol. |
| Aspects of the Crucible | Tail: Stormhill Evergaol. |
| Dragon Hearts | Obtained from defeated dragons, including Agheel, and exchanged at the Church of Dragon Communion. |
| Smithing Stones | Particularly common in Limgrave Tunnels and mine-like areas. |
Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears
Early Golden Seeds can be found along the main progression route, including near Stormhill Shack. Sacred Tears are placed in churches and should be collected before attempting difficult bosses. The precise total depends on whether one counts the whole Limgrave region, Stormhill and the Weeping Peninsula together, so this guide does not present a single West Limgrave total as if the boundary were officially enumerated.
Teardrop Scarabs
Teardrop Scarabs provide fixed rewards. A notable invisible scarab on the western shore, almost directly west of Stormfoot Catacombs, drops Ash of War: Stamp (Sweep). Special scarabs respawn if the player fails to kill them before they disappear, so a missed attempt is not necessarily permanent.
Route A: Safe first circuit
- 01Leave the Stranded Graveyard and complete the Cave of Knowledge if desired.
- 02Activate The First Step.
- 03Avoid the Tree Sentinel and visit Church of Elleh.
- 04Buy the Crafting Kit from Kalé.
- 05Travel north-west to Gatefront Ruins.
- 06Collect Map: Limgrave, West.
- 07Activate the Gatefront Site of Grace and meet Melina.
- 08Explore the ruins for the Whetstone Knife and Storm Stomp.
- 09Follow the road towards Stormhill, but do not feel obliged to enter Stormveil immediately.
- 10Return south and explore Groveside Cave, Limgrave Tunnels and Waypoint Ruins Cellar.
Route B: Lake and coast
- 01Ride to Agheel Lake South.
- 02Search the shoreline rather than crossing the lake directly.
- 03Visit Limgrave Tunnels for early upgrade stones.
- 04Explore Dragon-Burnt Ruins cautiously.
- 05Travel west to the coast.
- 06Clear Coastal Cave.
- 07Visit the western Nomadic Merchant.
- 08Use the coastal route to reach the Church of Dragon Communion.
- 09Return to the lake only when prepared for Agheel.
Route C: Stormhill preparation
- 01Collect the Golden Seed at Stormhill Shack.
- 02Speak with Roderika.
- 03Visit Warmaster’s Shack and speak with Bernahl.
- 04Free Alexander on the road.
- 05Explore Deathtouched Catacombs.
- 06Visit the Stormhill Evergaol if your build is ready for the Crucible Knight.
- 07Enter Castleward Tunnel and challenge Margit when you have upgraded your weapon and flask.
The Tree Sentinel
The Tree Sentinel is deliberately placed beside the first road. It teaches that open-world bosses do not need to be defeated immediately. Ride past him, use the Church of Elleh and Gatefront to acquire basic tools, then return with Torrent and an upgraded weapon.
Dragon-Burnt Ruins
The ruins contain hostile enemies and a misleading sense of safety. Search carefully, but do not assume every chest is harmless. The area also provides an early route towards the lake and an important underground discovery.
Night-time encounters
Several bosses and invasions are state-dependent. Rest at a Site of Grace, change the time to night and revisit merchant locations or isolated roads when looking for night bosses. Do not describe these as permanently absent merely because they did not appear during daytime exploration.
Fringefolk Hero’s Grave
This dungeon is accessible almost immediately but is balanced as a challenge for later. The chariot cannot simply be killed through ordinary early combat. Use alcoves, timing and the dungeon’s vertical route rather than treating it as a conventional hallway.
Missable or state-sensitive content
West Limgrave presents a land whose old order has collapsed without becoming empty. Godrick’s soldiers still occupy roads and forts, but their discipline is visibly failing. Demi-Humans and Misbegotten resist human rule, nobles wander without purpose, and the lake is dominated by a dragon whose presence has warped the surrounding ruins.
The Stormveil area preserves memories of an older age of storms and hawks. Limgrave’s item descriptions and environmental storytelling connect the region to Godfrey’s conquest, the fall of the storm lord and the later occupation of Stormveil by Godrick. The result is a region where the landscape itself records several overlapping regimes rather than presenting a single clear political authority.
Is Stormveil Castle part of West Limgrave?
It is physically in Limgrave and is the major dungeon dominating the western region, but Stormhill and Stormveil are also treated as distinct subregions or location categories. For a directory, list Stormveil separately while explaining its West Limgrave connection.
Is the Weeping Peninsula part of West Limgrave?
No. It is a neighbouring southern region connected by the Bridge of Sacrifice. It is part of the broader Limgrave area in some guides, but it should not be merged into a West Limgrave directory.
Should I kill the Tree Sentinel first?
No. It is optional and can be bypassed immediately. Returning later with Torrent, a stronger weapon and more flask charges is the intended practical approach for many players.
Where is the western Limgrave map?
At the map pillar in Gatefront Ruins. The fragment is named Map: Limgrave, West.
What should I buy first?
Buy the Crafting Kit from Merchant Kalé. After that, prioritise a torch if your build lacks a light source, arrows or bolts if you use ranged attacks, and the western Nomadic Merchant’s boluses or weapon stock if they suit your build.
Is this guide complete?
It is a researched regional guide and directory for the base-game West Limgrave scope described above. Some boundary cases remain inherently ambiguous because the game uses overlapping map labels for Limgrave, Stormhill, Stormveil and the wider southern peninsula. The guide therefore separates neighbouring regions rather than claiming that every guide uses identical borders.
